There was an awkward silence before Lucy and I joined the rest of our group under the tree. Emily and Gemma were doing their hair as usual and Amelia and Alice were having a competition to see how many grapes they could fit in their mouth. “Hey guys”, I yelled over the noise. Everyone turned to look at me and mumbled a quick greeting. Lucy on the other hand just plonked her self next to Alice and started stuffing her face with grapes.
“How was Biology?” Lucy asked Alice with a mouth full of grapes.
“As disgusting as usual. Mrs Sharp decided it was time we should all be able to dissect a cow. A bloody cow for Gods sake. I almost vomited with the little frog!”
“At least you don’t have Mr Port for English,” piped in Emily who had now finished fixing her hair that had been fine to begin with.
“Stop moaning all of you! I have Mrs Johnson for P.E and she is training us like we are at bootcamp,” whined Gemma.
Everyone started bickering about who the worst teachers were. I just sat there trying to listen to their conversation while eating my now cold turkey sandwich. Truth was I couldn’t care less about who the worst teacher was. I was to busy worrying about my assignment on the Encantado. What if I specialize in them? Will Lucy hate me? Could my dad be related to all of this? I was brought back down to reality when Emily started waving her hand in front of my face. “Bella stop! Your making it start to rain on us!” I looked up and saw to my astonishment a rain cloud had formed above our heads. It must have happened due to the amount of stress I was going through. I was saved from explaining when the bell rang for 3rd period. I hurriedly ran off to Self Defense.
Self Defense had to be one of my favorite subjects. Not only because Amelia and Gemma were in it but also I loved the feeling of being able to protect myself and not have to rely on others. I was ok at self defense but I was never going to be as good as Amelia who specialized in giants hence why she was so tough. I couldn’t help but be a little jealous. Amelia was the perfect person. She had perfect grades, an amazing body, she was gorgeous and she could beat a grown man in a fight. She was also really really tall.
“Class pick a partner and try the new move I taught you all!” yelled Miss Cannibelle. Gemma grabbed Amelia and everyone else seemed to have a partner except Leslie Vert. Leslie Vert was one of the toughest, meanest, ugliest girls at school. I don’t mean to be mean when I say ugly it’s just that she specialized in Ogres and she received a lot of their characteristics. I think her skin was even a light shade of green. I reluctantly walked over to my new partner. It was just my luck it was her turn to demonstrate the move first. I don’t remember much after that. Just Leslie picking me up and flipping me onto the mat with such force that my vision went black and I slipped out of consciousness.
I awoke to find myself in the school hospital with 5 faces peering down at me. “Arabella!” They all screamed. The nurse quickly came rushing in. “How long was I out?” I inquired.
“About 45 minutes,” the nurse who I recognized as Lucinda said. Wow 45 minutes. It felt like 5. “Do you remember what happened?” she asked.
“Only that Leslie Vert grabbed me and threw me onto the floor and then everything went black”.
“Well after that I was called in to come take you away.”
“What happened to Leslie?”
“She was sent to Mrs Wilksun.” Interrupted Lucy.
If I hadn’t been in so much pain I would have felt sorry for Leslie, but right now my leg felt like it was on fire. “ Did I break anything?” I mumbled.
“You fractured you arm and dislocated your leg so you should be done healing in about 15 minutes” replied Lucinda. I might be wise to let you know now that Lucinda specializes in Phoenixes. So when students come to her with injuries she simply cries on their wounds and they heal very fast due to the fact the Phoenix tears have healing abilities.
It was then I realized that my girls must be ditching class because 4th period was still in progress. “Aren’t you guys going to get in trouble for not being in class?” I asked.
“Oh no Miss Cannibelle said we could all skip period 4”, Gemma said evilly. Trust Gemma to turn my injuries into a way to skip class.
“Yeah, you should have seen Mr Port’s face when she came in and asked if I could be excused,” laughed Lucy.
Before long 15 minutes was up and I was walking back with Lucy to my Period 4 class English with Mr Port. If there had to be a class I wanted to miss it would be this one. Out of all my friends the only person who didn’t have Mr Port was Alice. The lucky girl had been put into Miss Rose’s English class. As Lucy and I walked into the room all eyes were on us. I couldn’t help but look smug as everyone looked at us wishing they had been able to ditch English. There was only 5 minutes of class left before the bell rang. I told Lucy I would meet her under the tree while I ran up the stairs two at a time to my room. I needed to talk to someone. Someone who understood exactly what I would be going through.
I sat down on my bed and took out my cell-phone I had hidden for emergencies. St Theresa has a strict policy on phones. They were forbidden and if you were caught with one it would be confiscated and you wouldn’t get it back until the end of the term. But this rule didn’t stop girls from having phones and hiding them in hollowed out books and pairs of socks. I dialed the only person I could think of in a situation like this, Zia. Zia is older than me by 3 years and graduated St Theresa around the same time Mum had her accident. She specializes in werewolves which always made me a little jealous because it was another thing she had in common with Mum that I didn’t. Zia picked up on the first ring. “Hey baby sis! What’s chilling?” her low husky voice rang through the phone.
“Well I broke my arm and dislocated my leg in self defense but now i’m fine.” To any other sister this would have made them freak out and demand I come home straight away but to Zia it sounded like a normal day at St Theresa.
“Well you know what they say ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. Now was that why you rang or is something else bothering you?”
“Um...well today in my shape-shifting class we got given an assignment on a Brazilian shape-shifter and I think maybe I could specialize in it.”
“Babe thats great!! Why do you sound so sad though?”
“Lucy’s great aunty was attacked and kidnapped by this shape-shifter and I’m worried she’ll hate me because it will be my job to protect the creature that murdered her great aunt.”
“Oh Bella don’t worry. You and Lucy are best friends and nothing can get between you. Besides you don’t even now if you have specialized in this thing yet.”
“I suppose your right”
“Of course I’m right! I’m the fabulous Zia Martinez.” She laughed down the phone.
“Ok well I better go, Lucy will be waiting. Bye Zia. Love you”
“Bye babe,” she practically screamed into the phone. I hung up and grabbed my lunch before running down to meet Lucy.
