He awoke with a snap at the sound of approaching footsteps.
"I'm sure I heard the snoring of a human." He couldn't make out what was speaking. "Are you sure Iberu, you might of just heard some sort of animal call." "I am one hundred percent sure." Ayre froze in horror.
What if they were one of the dukes men? He could already see the evil grin growing over the dukes face, his storm grey eyes lighting up and his thick midnight blue hair glowing in the moonlight when his men present another human to control.
The duke killed the queen about a year ago to gain absolute power, my friends say that he is the definition of a tyrant. If they were the dukes men he was done for.
He wished the queen still ruled, she was gracious and fair, all the men swooned over her breathtaking violet eyes and her vibrant gold hair, her honey skin and her sharp facial features. Even with all this beauty she never married, she once stated that she would marry when she found the right man. Of course she never did, she died alone.
"Come Iberu the queen expects us back by tomorrow and you probably just heard an animal."
The queen? She died long ago? How could this be? Did I imagined it?
Before they left Ayre was determined to see who they were. He very slowly inched out of his navy sleeping bag, he stood up at a painfully slow pace and creeped up behind a thin tree. When he finally worked up the courage to peek out, they were gone. "Blast, they're gone." He scowled "I hope I don't run into them on my way back but then again I do."
He stuffed his sleeping bag back into its case and picked up his pack in one swift motion.
He checked on the gem, making sure it was still there and in good condition, as it was the other night. "You are a curious thing." He spoke to the scarlet gem. "People would think I'm insane." He laughed to himself at how absurd this must have looked.
"I must be off, I don't won't mother to give me another lecture on keeping track of time."After another long day of traveling he slumped into his sleeping bag. He was on top of a grassy hill, which gave him a beautiful view of the sunset and the forest. The sun was just hitting the tree line making the light split into thousands of golden shards.
"What an amazing world we live in." He sighed as the golden shards of light made shadows with his hands.
He pulled out the gem and positioned it so the light hit it. He stared in silent wonderment at what he saw.
The golden light hit the gem making brilliant red lights that were almost as big as some of the trees, painting the lime green grass red. The red lights danced across his face almost blinding him in the process. "Beautiful."
As the last of the sun disappeared into the tree line he jumped up with a new found motivation.
"I will get home tomorrow, I am determined to show mother and father the deer."
He packed his sleeping bag again and set off down the hill. "I will be traveling through the darkness with animals that I may not know of." He had a sudden thought. "I need to cover the smell of the deer otherwise any wolves or something of the like will come after me."
He got a spare set of dirty clothing that his mother insisted he take and surrounded the pack that had the meat in it. "There, that oughta keep them away"
With the extra protection he continued his journey towards Domov.
