3: THERE'S A HIGHER POWER
"Stop doing that," Cash hisses at me from his watchman corner. I stop squirming under the ropes, instead, I stare at Cash with my most intimidating face until he looks away. I subtly keep pulling my hands apart and loosening the bind.
Judging by the faint daylight streaming through the windows, the night has passed, and I'm probably a missing person by now. I fell asleep briefly last night, only to be woken up by Cash's deafening snores.
"Surprised you aren't screaming more," Cash spoke again, like this was a casual conversation over dinner.
"What? So you can slap me and gag me again?"
He doesn't say anything after that. So like before, I'm stuck with nothing but the sound of my own thoughts.
He's watching me so I don't try to escape of course. That throws all of my current ideas out the window.
It isn't long before some kind of commotion starts up again. Cash is called out of the room by an unfamiliar voice; a woman's voice. I hear the clicking of high heels on the cement floor. As Cash exits, I strain my ears to listen for what she'd converse with him.
"Stay right outside this room. I'm going to have a little chat with Mae about our plan," the woman speaks.
She enters, smiling at me in almost a loving way. Her hair is platinum blonde, done up in a bun that left a few curly strands dangling. She wears lipstick the color of charcoal, and a killer cat eye. Her dress matches the lipstick, tying the look together perfectly.
"Hello, Mae. My name is Annie."
"How do you know my-"
"Not important," she cuts me off. "What is important is... the fact that you're here, and I'm here to tell you everything that's happened so far, and everything that's yet to happen."
I hold my breath.
"As my two superb assistants must've told you, what we want is money-"
I cut her off. "Who is we?"
Her beautifully manicured hand travels across my face in an abrupt motion. "Don't you fucking interrupt me, stupid bitch."
I press my burning cheek to my shoulder, inhaling and exhaling sharply while she continued.
Annie gets closer to my face. "You're father has money." She pauses, looking side to side briefly as if someone were to hear her. "We're gonna get that money. And you won't have a chance of being returned to your father until he hands over every penny he's got. I left a note at your house saying just this. But the thing is, I lied about a few things."
By now, the ropes around my wrists were loose enough that I could slip them off. As much as I want to hear the rest of her evil plan, it was the perfect time to strike; while she's distracted. I quickly slide the ropes off my wrist, then drive a forceful punch toward Annie's face.
She instantly retreats, holding her jaw and screaming barely coherently for help.
I take her backtrack as a chance to pull the pocket knife from my boot, then cutting the ropes around my feet. I'm entirely free. A sense of relief washes over me, but at the same time, about a million new anxieties to worry about.
Cash and another buff guy rush into the room as Annie makes a break for it. I hold the knife threateningly in their direction.
"How the hell did she get a knife?" The unnamed man wonders allowed.
"Dunno, but we better fuggin' get it from her," Cash spits, examining my stance.
They charge at me, causing me to fight for steady breaths. I nick each of them with the knife as a warning, but when they don't take it seriously, I go full-on rabid wolf on those two.
I feel a meaty shoulder, not sure whose, and plunge the knife in and out again through the thick flesh. He howls in agony before bulldozing through the room away from me. The other man, who I seen see is the unfamiliar one, continues to swing and hit, but his swings are weak. I can tell he's afraid of having the same outcome as Cash.
I finally scramble to a good angle and the knife penetrates through his plump arm. I yank it out swiftly so I still have some kind of self defense. The man hisses and clambers away, holding the wound.
While there's no one else in the room with me, I run towards the window - to no avail, I look down and see that I'm at least 4 stories high.
I feel a needle in my back. I turn around to see Annie, a medial-looking person, and yet another muscular guy. They all smirk at me as I fall backwards, unconscious.
