Beep Beep.
As the distant sound of an alarm fades into Lux's consciousness, she slowly drags herself out of bed to notice that she slept in. This can not be happening on the first day of school.
Lux scampers to the bathroom to get ready. She runs out of her bedroom not noticing she was wearing her white skinny jeans and the ugly sweater her Grandma gave her last Christmas. She heads to the kitchen, grabs a bagel, and begins running out the door. While walking to the bus stop Lux thinks to herself. If the weather looks this good, this day cannot be as bad as I expected it to be. Today will be the best first day of high school.
Lux arrives to the bus stop and notices the bus coming around the corner. She puts her hand in her backpack to find her bus pass. She aggressively searches her bag and then remembers that she had put her bus pass in the secret pocket. She fumbles through her secret pocket for the pass. Suddenly Lux looks up to see the bus zoom right past her. She pulls out her phone and checks the schedule to discover the next bus would not be coming for another hour. She decides to walk to school. This day cannot be that bad, I only missed the bus. It is still sunny outside so there is a really good chance of this being a good day, she thinks.
Bloop Bloop.
A raindrop lands right on the middle of Lux's forehead. She looks up to notice rain start to fall. Lux tries to stay calm. It's okay, I will make it to school before it really starts to pour down. I am already halfway to school; it cannot take me that long to get there.
Right after Lux's pep talk, she begins to observe the rain slowly begins to come down harder. With the raindrops pouring down, it was only a matter of time before her clothes became drenched. The last time it rained Lux remembers her mother giving her the talk about the birds and the bees. After the incident in middle school where she was teased by all the other girls for having ant bites. Which she did not notice till they were outside in the rain playing soccer. By the end of the conversation with her mom, Lux got the new nickname Bosom Blossom. After that day she believed no day could be worse than that two-hour conversation with her mother.
By this time, Lux is across the street from her school. Only a few steps from entering the school, by now her clothes are nearly dry. Lux steps across the street, a car speeds by and splashes her. Lux looks down at her clothing, she is fully drenched in muddy rainwater. She screams in anger, "You have got to be kidding me! Come on, you're in a school zone! Slow down! Who taught you how to drive? Grand Theft Auto?"
She turns around to everybody outside the school staring at her as if she has gone mad. Lux enters the school and notices all the squeaky chatter. Eyes glare her down as she walks through the hall.
After spending what has felt like hours in the bathroom to get clean, the second bell rings. Lux walks out feeling dirty but still less of a hot mess than when she walked in. She rushes to her first period and opens the door to notice her new classmates shooting dagger looks at her as if she had just unfollowed them on Twitter.
"Hello, Miss. Are you going to come in and have a seat or are you going to wait for Blackberry to come out with a good phone?" says the women with brown hair writing on the chalkboard.
Lux tries to quietly sneak to the back of the room that has only one seat left. As she lifts her head she notices that she is sitting next to Brittany Barnabee. She sighs with annoyance. Out of the people she could be sitting next to, it is Brittany. Brittany Barnabee was the most popular girl in school who was very wealthy but was also known as Lux's arch enemy since middle school. Everybody saw Brittany as a sweet girl, but Lux saw her for who she really was: Satan's second cousin. Lux turns her head to see Brittany looking over at her and shouting, "OMG is that you Lux, long time no see. What are you wearing? Did you get that from Garage, I mean Garbage? Sorry, I am not sorry for splashing you and you're welcome. I did you a favor because what you are wearing is worth more now. Before you just looked like a garbage bag, now you look garbage chic."
"Ladies at the back, do not make me separate you," said the teacher. "Bosom blossom is that you? I did not know that you would be in my class." Everyone turned to notice she was speaking to Lux. Mom! What are you doing here? "I am your new grade 9 Chemistry teacher Mrs. Bridgewater." Lux face filled with embarrassment as she sank deeper into her seat. She realized that she was wrong. That two-hour talk with her mom was not the worst moment of her life this was.
