The Train Station

The journey to the craft was long and tiresome, by the time we got there the interior of the High Speed Train was stitched into my memory. I had nothing to do but watch the built-in tv which had two channels and one was in an alien language. Ever since earth created a peace treaty with Jupiter the two inhabitants are given the right to freely move between each planet, so earth is required to broadcast the Luppiter News station all day. I don’t mind it but humans have no reason to go to a gas planet, so it is kind of a one sided deal. At least the agreement stopped the war.

When we arrived to Ingin’s Earth Headquarters I looked out the train window at the large oval shaped building which was a few steps from the station. The sky was cloudy and it was about to rain, a large contrast from the weather back home. I wasn't told where the Headquarters is but judging by the length of the journey its a long way from Mexico.

“You ready, little lady?” Said the woman who had picked me up from my house. She has incidentally been sitting with me the whole journey in an awkward silence. This was the first time we had spoken.

“I’m still a little shaky but I think I’ll be fine, thank you.” I replied,

“Okay. Oh! I nearly forgot, here, clip this on you somewhere visible,” She handed me a clip for my I.D. card to go into. I took out my card and let it hang from my front pocket.

“Alright well I think it’s time to leave and meet the others.” She meant the other employees. The 26 people who I’ll be working with, as well as the workers already on board the satellite. I’ve been worried about making friends, or at least an acquaintance. Six years is long but it will be even longer with no one to talk to.

When we got out of the train I was told to walk straight to an arched doorway near the entrance of the train station. A guy was already standing there along with an official Ingin officer, covered in medals and wearing a purple uniform. The guy had long-ish blonde hair and was fairly tall. He looked at me as I approached and I smiled so I didn’t look rude.

“Hello, I’m Jesse. You can just call me Jess though,” He said and extended an arm towards me.

“I’m Rosario. Most people call me Rose,” I replied while meeting his hand with my own,

“Okay, nice to meet you Rose,” He shook my arm furiously; he looked strong, like he had been in weeks of training.

We let go of each other hands and I stood beside him. I realise now that he was indeed very tall and I only reached to his shoulder, so I looked fairly tiny standing with him. I managed to look at the I.D. card that he had on, it read:

“So where are you working?” He asked which startled me because I was apparently staring at the card on his chest.

“In Sorting Execution,” I replied,

“Oh, Level 2. I’m on Level 4, shipment.”

“What do you do in shipment?” I asked

“We take in the supplies brought from earth, it sounds easy but I’ve been trained for five weeks on how to work the trucks, and handling the radioactive material isn’t easy either,”

“Radioactive?” I must have looked scared because he quickly explained,

“Oh, no, don’t worry. It doesn’t come near any floors but four and one. I have no clue why they need it but it’s not part of my job to know. What’s your job, Rose?”

“I make sure the wishes are executed properly. I’m guessing it is a lot of paperwork and filing but I still don’t know much about it,” I wasn’t lying. I honestly don’t know much about what I will be doing, I just know that the skills I have are good enough for the company to hire me.

“Jess?” I asked.

“Yeah, Rose?”

“The paperwork I got in my letter didn’t have any information on what they do on Level One, do you kn…”

“Attention!” A voice from speakers connected to the arch said, interrupting my question to Jess. “Can all Ingin Employees please make their way to the main building. If you need directions, don’t hesitate to ask Ingin Directors who are wearing a purple uniform. Thank you and we are glad to have you on board.”

I looked down the train platform and saw the other workers all standing. They must have arrived while I was talking to Jess. One of the people I noticed was a guy maybe five years older than me. He had very pale skin and was on his own standing in the corner.

"That's Eron," Jess said after he noticed me staring, "He works in shipment too. I haven't heard a word from him since training started. I don't think he's good at making friends."

"He is kind of intimidating, honestly,"

"He really isn't," Jess said before chuckling to himself, "He spent every training break petting the stray cat that lived near-by. Eron is very gentle. I think he eventually took it home. It won't matter now anyway because we'll all be away for so long."

Eron looked over at us. I smiled and waved. He just looked away, got up and started walking to the main building. Jesse puts his hand on my shoulder and told me we should go as well. I realized then that I made my first friend. I'm just disappointed that he is not the same level as me but we will probably see each other on our breaks.

Jess and I entered the main building and we were guided in to the craft that will take us to the satellite base. It was very large and had long lines of green lights along the sides. It was about 150 ft from the base to the top which didn't help me calm down about the flight.
