Lovino looked at his captain in confusion. His captain was Captain Antonio Fernandez Carriedo. He was one of the best captains who even clashed with Captain Arthur Kirkland on some occasions. Captain Carriedo was feared across the seven seas.

So why was there a turtle perched upon his feared captain's shoulder? Wasn't there supposed to be a parrot there instead?

Lovino gave Antonio a strange look, but looked away when the captain turned his gaze near him. Lovino, no matter how aggressive he acted, would rather not get on Antonio's bad side. For many days at sea, Lovino stole glances at the turtle that sat on his captain's shoulder. Every single time, Antonio would notice his crew member's stare, but every time he would look back, Lovino looked away. Antonio had decided enough was enough.

Antonio stood on the upper deck, overlooking his crew working.

"Lovino." Antonio called to his angsty crew member. Lovino looked up from sweeping the deck in annoyance. "Come here."

Lovino muttered something under his breath, likely in Italian, and made his way up.

"What is it, bastardo (*1)?" Lovino snapped. The Italian was given special permission to speak like he did because Antonio had taken a liking to him.

"I noticed you've been staring at me for a few days now. Why is that, Lovi?" Antonio asked before Lovino could spit out another retort. Lovino felt himself turning red in the face. He looked up at Antonio's shoulder and the turtle was still there.

"I did no such thing!" Lovino denied. "It's all just your imagination, Captain."

"But Lovi," Antonio dragged out the last syllable of Lovino's nickname for a few extra moments. He almost sounded like a whining two-year-old. "I saw it with my own two eyes."

"No you didn't. You're probably just hallucinating because we haven't docked at a port for a while." Lovino did his best to make up an excuse, but Antonio saw right through it.

"Is it that bad to admit you've looked at your captain?" Antonio asked. The Spaniard tried to catch Lovino's gaze, but the little Italian's eyes were transfixed on the turtle sitting upon the golden tassels on his captain's jacket. "Do you want my tortuga (*2)?"

Lovino's eyes snapped back to Antonio in confusion.

"Why the hell would I want your tartaruga (*3)?" Lovino retorted.

"You were staring at it. Have you been staring at the tortuga the whole time?" Antonio reached a hand back to his shoulder and let the turtle climb onto his hand. He held it in his hands for a moment and held it out for Lovino to take. If Lovino didn't know he was a pirate captain, he would've thought Antonio was a turtle caretaker. "He won't hurt you. His name is Romano the Tortuga. Why don't you keep him for a while? I think he likes you."

"You named the turtle? And how would you know what the damn tartaruga likes?" Despite his words, Lovino put his hands out and let the small turtle slowly crawl onto him. It made its way up Lovino's arm and settled nicely on his head, covering itself up with soft, brown hair.

"I found out Romano and I liked the same things. We like eating, taking a nice siesta, and tomatoes. I figured if he was like me, he must like you!" Antonio exclaimed shamelessly. Lovino almost choked after hearing those words.

"Wh-What is that supposed to mean, idiota (*4)!?" Lovino stumbled back. Romano had managed to not fall off and tangle itself further into Lovino's hair.

"Was I unclear or something, querido (*5)?" Antonio gave Lovino one of his signature smiles. Lovino felt himself momentarily go blind at the sight. "If I said Romano is just like me and Romano likes you, what do you think that means?"

"Shut up, stronzo (*6)!" Lovino's cheeks reddened at Antonio's bold statement.

Lovino knew in the back of his mind that he should leave before he said something he would regret. The blushing Italian tried to walk away, even if it meant losing some of his dignity, but his feet were stuck to the ground. Lovino internally cursed himself for not being able to leave the uncomfortable situation.

"I-If that's all, Captain Carriedo..." Lovino bit his tongue for stuttering. Loving managed to take a step back without stumbling over his feet, only for Antonio to take a step forward to compensate for the widening distance.

"But Lovi..." Unlike last time he said Lovino's nickname, Antonio's voice got much deeper and huskier. Lovino felt like he was drowning in his captain's unnaturally attractive accent. "Aren't you going to respond? And the new respect is very flattering."

Just then, Lovino had realized he used more respect in the past five minutes than ever in his lifetime with Antonio. This was a time for last resort methods.

"Beh, questo non significa niente, bastardo! E il nuovo rispetto non ha nulla a che fare con questo! Volevo solo provare qualcosa di nuovo, tutto qui! Non avere l'idea sbagliata! Non è che mi piaci o qualcosa del genere! (*7)" Lovino yelled. Italian was his only defense mechanism left.

Instead of Antonio looking confused and sending him away, he grinned throughout his whole "speech." It was then Lovino remembered that Spanish is quite similar to Italian.

"Lovi, why do you deny me?" It was clear Antonio was trying to guilt trip him, but Lovino couldn't help but feel bad. "Is it because you're my crew member?"

"Damn you, tomato bastard. Fine. I don't hate you as much as everyone else."

Antonio took Lovino by the hand and pulled him closer to his chest. Lovino let out a rather feminine squeak at the unexpected action. Lovino braved himself, thinking that Antonio would touch his curl, but instead he pet the turtle.

"So do you want to keep Romano for a little while?" Antonio repeated. He tried to untangle Romano from Lovino's hair.

"Maybe I will. You did say that he was just like you. And I wouldn't mind another you," Loving admitted sheepishly.

"Then keep him so you don't get too lonely without me," Antonio laughed as Lovino hit his chest.

"I don't get lonely," Lovino argued.

"I'm sure you don't," Antonio agreed. There was some silence before Lovino spoke again.

"But try not to get yourself killed by another captain like Captain Kirkland. I ne-I mean, the crew needs you." Lovino muttered into Antonio's pirate overcoat.

Antonio hummed in agreement, deliberately not starting another agrument. After all, his little tomato needed him. If he wanted to be there for his novio (*8), he needed to stay alive.
