Helmi grew up in India, and she came here at a very early age with her parents who wanted to give her more opportunities than they had in India. They believed that opportunity was tied to a place, but Helmi soon learned that opportunity came in the discovery of her light.

Helmi's light was connected to her ability to sing, and when she sang out loud to her parents for the first time at the age of 5, her parents knew she had something special. India was very different from the United States because even though people couldn't see the lights like they once had, they still believed that they were there just beyond not clearly visible to them, at least not yet.

Helmi's parents would pray to the gods to help Helmi find her light, but nothing worked. So, one day, they decided to just wait without pushing her or praying for her. When the prayers stopped, Helmi sang. It was a miracle from the gods.

Her voice was that which only Helmi could have as she sang a song about happiness and joy to her parents. Her light came through her voice as she sang the music in her soul. Helmi's parents helped her improve her skills, and before she knew it, she was singing in local shows. By the age of 9, Helmi had her first record, but by the age of 14, something changed. It wasn't because of Helmi, but it was because of the presence, or lack of presence, from her parents. Helmi's dad died just before her 14th birthday, and she was left broken inside. She didn't know if she could continue to sing her joyful music when she did not feel those feelings. Sadness and confusion were not emotions she wanted to bring up in her music, so she decided to stop singing all together.

But, since Helmi knew of the lights, and she had seen her own, she didn't lose her ability just yet. Helmi wanted to mourn first, and once she felt like she got the okay from her dad in the other world, she decided that should be able to sing once again.
