The place smelled like vomit & cigarettes mixed with alcohol. She was over by the pool tables with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of bourbon in the other. Her face had been painted with what had fallen from her eyes as well as the mascara that was once in perfect placement. Receiving looks from others I knew I was only there to get her out and nothing more. Once I got close enough I leaned in to whisper something when she spoke.
"What are you doing here?" Her voice soft and broken.
"I would ask you the same thing."
"I just want to forget." Her eyes glossed over and she turned around to face me. In the moment all I wanted to do was hold her but with all serpents in a room looking at me I withheld my actions.
"Come with me. You shouldn't be in this place."
We got into my car and that's when she let lose.
"I'm sorry. I just can't do this anymore. I'm not good enough. I just want to give up."
"Are you hungry?"
With the nod of her head I pulled into the vast parking lot of McDonalds. I ordered her food and walked back to the car.
"Don't tell him....about where you found me."
"Where did you tell him this time?"
"Just a walk."
"This late at night?"
"He bought it."
There was silence for a good minute.
"You didn't-
"-do anything stupid? No, I didn't."
"Good. Why didn't you umm......why didn't you come to me first?"
"I didn't want to bother you with this." She let out a sign.
"You know I'm always here for you though." There was something I was dying to do.
"I know...and...I'm-"
I cupped her face with both my hands and brought her close to me. Our lips locked and for awhile I was getting no response. I felt her hands on mine and her lips moved in sync with mine. After a while she pulled back.
"This is wrong. We shouldn't. You have your person and I have mine." She paused and looked into my eyes.
"But it feels so right."
She collided her lips onto mine & we moved to the backseat.
