"He was married for ten years and he just up and left her one night," Sheppard explained. "And now all he does is gamble and drink."

I unwrapped my chicken sandwich and looked it over while he filled me in on his uncle.

"And now he met this woman, and it's just one mess after another." He took his sandwich from me and took a big bite.

I pulled the bun back checking out what was on mine. "Did he divorce your aunt?"

Sheppard shook his head. "Fuck no. He is too busy spending all his money to worry about her or anyone else."

"That's sad." I took a bite of my sandwich and chewed thoughtfully. "But also not your problem."

He swallowed his food. "He's one of my best friends. Not just my uncle."

"There's only so much you can do for someone." I took another bite of my sandwich because it was fucking delicious. "And getting involved in their love life is not one of them believe me. One time I tried to make Max dump this girl he was seeing, and we nearly got into a fistfight."

"So what happened?" Sheppard asked.

I shrugged. "I acted like I didn't care. And he finally did what he should have and came to me after." I had bigger battles to win.

"He said he's stranded at her house. And that she's flipping out. He needs a ride out of there," Sheppard told me.

"If this is what you want to do, then we'll do it." I went back to my sandwich. "What's the worst that could happen?" Normal people problems didn't scare me.
