"So, let me get this straight." Sheppard said. "You and Dick know each other?"
When he said Dick he wasn't saying it in a nice way. He wasn't Uncle Richard, Sheppard called him Dick.
"Well... kind of." I sighed. "I met him once."
Sheppard was still trying to process it all. "And that lady he's dating is your mother?"
We both nodded.
"Was dating. She's too crazy for me. That bitch hit me in the head with a plate!" Dick shook his head.
He continued making a big deal. If he only knew what I knew, it wouldn't have been a big deal at all. A plate was nothing compared to what she could have done to him.
"That bitch, could have killed you," I warned him.
He smirked. "Let's not get too cocky. She hit me with a plate. Nobody kills Dick."
"Are you an idiot?" I squinted at him. "You sound really stupid."
Sheppard stopped him before he could say anything else. "Enough."
"What?" Dick asked. "Why are you so defensive?" He looked between the two of us. "Are you kidding me? Are you fucking this one?"
I was ready to punch him. It wasn't any of his business what we were doing. "Shouldn't you be more concerned with your issues and less about mine?"
"He's my nephew." He waved the whole idea off, shaking his head. "There's no way."
I drew in a deep breath and held it before I punched him. He was really making me feel like crap.
"And that's her mom. So shut the fuck up," Sheppard shoved him. "Don't be an asshole. You should thank her for saving you. What the hell are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?"
Dick lit a cigarette. "We had a thing. Why don't you worry about your thing and I will worry about mine?"
Sheppard ran a hand through his hair. "Apologize to Joselyn."
He shook his head refusing. "Just get me the fuck home."
I looked at the house as they argued. She was probably lying in her bed coming up with a plan or drinking her anger into a nice ball of hatred. She didn't let things go.
"Tell her you're sorry, or I'm leaving you here."
I shook my head. "It's fine. Let's go. He's an asshole, I get it."
Sheppard refused to budge. "He apologizes, or he walks." He pointed to the car. "Get in."
I touched my chest. "Who me?"
He nodded and looked at his uncle. "It's a long walk back to your place."
Dick took one last drag of his cigarette and chucked it at Sheppard. "You wouldn't leave me here."
I got in and watched from the front seat. I wasn't sure if Sheppard would or not. But I buckled up. He seemed to be serious.
Sheppard rounded the car going to his side. "Okay, fuck you. Have a nice night. Let's hope Uber can find you out in the middle of bum fuck." He hopped in the car, started it up and took off down the dirt road.
I laughed.
Sheppard looked at me. "What's so funny?"
I shook my head. "You really left him." I watched Dick in the mirror as he kicked at the dirt.
"He was being an asshole to you. I was defending you."
I grinned. "Nobody has ever done that. That's kind of funny too."
Sheppard tilted his head. "Well, they should. They all should."
I grabbed his hand and squeezed it. "Thank you."
"No problem." He squeezed my hand back.
"Now go get him." I told him.
"What? No way. I want him to at least think we will really leave him out here." Sheppard watched in the mirror. "Let me get some enjoyment out of this."
I grabbed the water between us and took a drink. "Okay, okay. We will circle around. That should be long enough for him to think we left him."
Sheppard nodded in agreement. "Deal."
I capped the water and settled back in my seat.
Sheppard drove around the corner, we could no longer see Dick.
He looked at me. "You know, we're like Bonnie and Clyde."
"Oh yeah?"
He nodded. "Yeah. We work well together."
