Delilah's POV
Ow.
That hurt. I was walking around the book store looking for my new read-of-the-week and while reaching for an interesting looking cover I collided with another body.
"Ah, shit," I exclaimed as I was pushed into a bookshelf.
I felt hands grab my waist and pull be back before I fell down, and I willingly went with them so I wouldn't hit the floor.
"I'm so sorry! I wasn't looking where I was going, and I saw this really interesting book that caught my full attention and I totally tuned everything else out in my mission to get it and oh my god are you okay?" A melodious voice rambled. It kind of reminded me of a piano.
I regained my balance then turned around in the person's hold and saw a girl who was around my age, maybe a year or two younger, with dark brown hair and eyes that were the color of liquified silver.
She was only maybe an inch taller than I was, but I still had to look up slightly to look at her whole face.
Her lips were carefully arched into a perfect Cupid's bow and were candy floss pink. She had a cute button nose slightly tilted up with a smattering of freckles across her cheeks and forehead. She had skin that wasn't particularly pale, but it wasn't tan either.
I realized I had been staring and a blush burned it's way across my face.
She looked at me in concern. "Are you okay? I'm so sorry again."
I willed my voice not to shake at how gorgeous she was and replied, "Yes! I mean, yes, I'm fine. It's really no problem, it was an accident."
"Thank god. Well, um, I'm Cora," The girl, now named Cora, said.
"I'm Delilah," I answered back.
Her eyes lit up. "That's the name of main character in the book I'm reading right now!"
I didn't know what to say to that so I just stared at her and nodded.
She laughed and said, "Well, I better get going. I'm just gonna grab this book behind you..."
I started and moved over so she could reach the book, coincidentally the same book that I wanted to read. I told her this and she laughed again.
I liked her laugh. It was lower than you would expect it to be, more from her chest than her head, reminding me of a thunderstorm.
I shook her laugh out of my head and moved on to what was about to happen. She was gonna leave and I was never going to see her again! I didn't want to let this opportunity go, so I blurted out "hey, if you don't really have to get going, maybe we could read together? Is that weird? I'm sorry if that's weird."
She looked at me for a moment then smiled, nodding as she grabbed two copies of the book. It was something my friend had recommended to me awhile ago, but only just found.
"Have you read Simon Vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda? I've heard it's good but I haven't actually read it myself. My younger sister read it and absolutely adored it so I thought I'd better give it a try," Cora told me excitedly.
"I haven't actually, but it's been recommended to me more times than I can count," I answered as I took one of the books from her hand.
We went and sat in two of the giant overstuffed armchairs in the corner of the bookstore. I didn't know how this was gonna go, but I determinedly ignored the nagging feeling of doubt in the back of my mind and looked at Cora.
"So how do you want to do this?" She asked me.
"Uh, I don't really know. I've never done something like this before." I answered nervously.
It turns out that we were both naturals at whatever the hell this is. We sat in silence next to each other and read Simon for the next two hours. We were almost done with the book when Cora looked at her phone and exclaimed, "oh my god I'm so late! I was supposed to meet my sister for dinner tonight at Olive Garden. Shit, let me call her."
She quickly stood up and walked a short distance away, tapping a few buttons on her phone then holding it up to her ear. As she was talking I leaned back in my chair and realized that hey, that was a pretty cool date.
And then immediately backtracked realizing I called it a date. Was it a date? I can't say for sure, but in the comforts of my head I'm just gonna keep calling it a date. It sounds nicer and more romantic than hanging out.
Cora walked back over to me and picked up her bag and book.
"This was really fun! I hope we have the chance to do it again sometime, Liah," Cora told me.
"Liah?" I asked her.
"Yup. Your new nickname. I've really got to go, but I hope to see you around!"
She left so fast I had to take a second to go through that conversation in my mind. I didn't even get her phone number! God damn it.
