Chapter One
Castiel
“Cassie stop glaring at the building. You’re not gonna make it spontaneously combust ya know.”
Gabriel’s voice was only half-amused as we sat in the back seat of our case worker’s car. Ruby was currently inside, talking to staff members, having left us to rot in the back seat of
her car for God only knew how long.
Granted we didn’t really want to go inside either. I’d rather jump into a sewer than spend
a single night in a mental ward for teens. The very idea that we may have to spend weeks in that hell hole let alone months almost more than I could bare.Which was why I’d been refusing to even think about it until now. It was ridiculous. The woman was fucking mad and I should have her thrown in jail. Beside me, Gabriel sighed and leaned his head against the window.
“I don’t want to fucking be
here.” I said in an angry whisper, glaring once again at the building in front of us.
“Neither do I but we’re not eighteen yet. Therefore we have to be here. Running away will get us sent to jail. Jail means separation. We’re not being separated - again - because you insist on being an idiot Cassie.”
“I know we can’t risk it Gabe. I’m not a complete moron. I just...prefer to not spend the next eight months of my life surrounded by a bunch of therapists and shit.”
My twin rolled his eyes, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “I don’t prefer it either but we’ll make do. We’ll come up with a way to make it fun.”
The thought of fun had a grin on my face. Gabriel and I were about as different as we could possibly be. I was sarcastic and broody and...well assholish while he was bright and cheery and...well not nice but a bit nicer than me. Though it wasn’t hard to be nicer than me. Our differences were why we worked so well together, though. Our idea of ‘fun’ was pulling pranks or getting into other mischief that we were otherwise forbidden to do. Gabe would come up with a plan and I would do everything else. His planning skills and my detailing skills worked brilliantly together. Maybe this place wouldn’t be so bad. If we could find a way to have a little fun...we may just be able to survive here.
“Damn right we will. Turn this place on its head.” I said and Gabriel laughed, rolling his eyes skyward.
“Don’t we always, brother?”
We were still grinning a little when Ruby came out to get us. My grin faded to a scowl as she opened my car door and purposely wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I hated this woman. Almost more than I hated...well nevermind that. I just hated her. Wriggling out from under her grasp, I leaned against the door and grabbed a small bag. A few seconds later, Gabe was standing beside me. He was still smiling but it was a dangerous smile now. I’d seen that smile too many times to count and it always meant one thing: stay away. It was his...protection I supposed. If he wasn’t ready for someone to talk to - or touch - him, he’d plaster that smile on his face and cross his arms over his chest. Like he was doing now. Of course Ruby chose to ignore it all together. She stood between us and wrapped one arm around each of our shoulders. Gabe shrugged out from under her and came to stand on my other side. Grabbing her arm, I removed it from my shoulders and glared at her.
