"Wow" Mason simply stated, humor clear on his face. I looked uncomfortably between Mason and Madison trying to plan my next move, nothing really coming to mind. It was especially hard to think with Madison's smug eyes staring at me like a piece of dirt. She herself couldn't have picked a better way for me to be humiliated in front of Mason. You didn't have to be a rocket scientist to see that.
"Looks like your little friend here has a problem with lurking", Madison summed up what I was doing before I could even spit a defense out. Even though Madison got the first word didn't mean I wasn't going down without a fight. The last thing I wanted Mason to think was that I was a weirdo. He was the only friend I had here apart from Sara. Even Sara would be considered more of a friendly acquaintance than anything else.
"Not lurking", I jumped in noticing Mason's face had scrunched up at the word, "I was simply going to show Mason how funny I looked in this costume. Then he started talking to you so I figured I would wait." I was able to say the lie without flinching which impressed me.
Madison didn't seem to like the fact I had actually corrected her. Flipping her hair over her shoulder, she turned her attention away from me and towards Mason. "Come on. Let's get out of here. I know someplace where we can get out of this heat and be alone." She then put on some sort of face that makes men drool and girls die a little inside. I just wanted to vomit, especially when I saw interest in Mason's face. Wait a minute, why is he looking at her like that?
To my relief the look seemed to disappear almost as sudden as it came. Madison tugged on his arm but he stayed planted in front of me. "Maybe some other time," Mason shook his head, "I'm going to stay here with Lilly for awhile."
"There won't be another time. I don't wait for boys. Boys wait for me", Madison said with venom in her voice. Pride obviously hurt, she stuck up her nose and strutted off, swaying her butt as she went. Topped by an elephant, I thought triumphantly celebrating my victory over Madison. I was sure it was going to be a short lived victory but a victory all the same.
I laughed nervously as I looked back at Mason, "Well that was sort of awkward." I tried to pass the fact Madison was being bitchy as the reason things were awkward. I could tell by the look on Mason's face he didn't agree.
"Why were you following me?" He asked. I cringed slightly.
"I wasn't", I told him. By the look on his face he obviously wasn't buying that lie.
"Quit lying." He responded simply.
"Lying? I don't see my nose growing." I tried to make a joke but Mason didn't take the bait and smile. He might've taken my side before but now he was serious.
" I know you were. I figured out it was you in the elephant suit when I heard you yelling at some little kid to stop kicking you." He smirked slightly when he saw the disbelief on my face. I thought I had been following him at least somewhat sneakily but if what he was saying was true he knew it was me before I had even begun to follow him. I put all spies to shame with my terrible spying. Surely James Bond was sitting in his room sobbing over my pathetic attempt.
"So maybe I was. Is wanting to talk to you such a bad thing?" I questioned knowing I probably just busted his ego into outer space. I had gone from not wanting to ever talk to him in fear of becoming too close to following him around in an elephant suit. And that was just in a little over a week.
"No its not," He said slowly, probably not sure if I was just kidding or not. Usually he was the one trying to do the talking not me. Not the girl with the boyfriend. "So what did you want to talk about?"
