Lara called me to go shopping. I need to practice filleting and deboning but my fillet knife is just awful. I keep it sharp and top notch, alas you can glue wings to a pig but that won't make it a dove.
I reluctantly agree to go with her and relax a bit. Maybe I can find an affordable knife on sale.
She announces that she wishes to go to the thrift store first. Whilst she checks labels and buttons on some jackets I approach a box with, what seems to be kitchen supplies.
A wooden box, with some kanji markings looks worse for wear. My curiosity gets the better of me and I open it. Three Kamikoto blades. Flawless, I can see the sharp edge and I have to shake myself. The box, that looks burnt on the outside is perfect on the inside. The blue velvet, flawless.
'Oh, I see you are looking in the clearance bin' The shopkeeper mutters
I exhale, realising I was holding my breath. 'Clearance?'
'Yes. Our main focus is clothes, this bin was included in the estate and sent to us, but we do not really care for it. You can have the whole box for 100 USD.
'A hundred dollars?' I cannot believe this. The knife set is worth way more than that. I know this may set my savings back a little but this is a godsend. 'You have a deal'.
While the shopkeeper closes the box with tape, Lara gets to the till with two colourful blazers and barters for a discount. She does not get it.
'Hey, what did you get? You never buy anything, what is in that box?'
'I am not entirely sure I care for the full box, but there is a knife set that will make all the difference in my life. It is a treasure! We can get some supplies and I can prepare dinner in the studio.'
'Sure, I'll get some wine whilst you choose the food. You know I am hopeless'.
The studio is small and spartan. The closet is bare and the highlight of the room are the windows. Floor to ceiling, in a corner. One could complain about privacy or lack of thereof but she did not. Her petite frame had struggled in setting the blackout curtains but she had succeeded. She only closed them for changing her clothes as waking up with natural light was one of her favourite parts of her day.
She went through the box and determined that the only valuables were the knifes and would take out to the trash the rest. She accidentally drops the box and gasps, as she goes on her knees to pick it up she sees a small piece of paper separating itself from the Certificate of Authenticity.
Yuki.
Oh! Maybe the previous owner called the knives Yuki as in snow. What a lovely name. She was used to naming inanimate objects, it could seem silly but it helped keeping lonely nights less lonely.
She felt a shiver and closed the window as the storm picked up.
Come on Lara! Dinner is ready.
After having sharpened the knives and cleaning the blades, she was in awe. They really did make all the difference in the world.
