Slay Your Own Dragons

There was a time when I sat alone by my window and watched everyone else play outside through the glass

The day came when a boy with his shaggy brown hair ran up to the glass and he waved

Up through the sun at the window where I sat in my long dress staring down at him

And so I snuck away from my guards and ran out to play with the blue ball

When more boys came to play they didn't like me joining in their game - No Girls

They said and I looked to the brown haired boy with tears in my eyes

But he took the ball away and ran to play with old friends instead

And so I sat underneath a tree and wept until late that night

After the sun set and dinner had past I then walked inside

Saying I would never leave my window again, only sadness awaited

As I walked the shaggy haired boy approached me again

And I cried to him, why did you leave

He replied that it was I, a princess

That send good men into dangerous fights

Fights against dragons that killed men

I asked as he left

He then turned and

Said "Slay Your

Own Dragons,

Princess"

Blood

Drips down

The sword's edge

Black and viscous drips

Before me lies a dragon

A grimace twists my face darkly

As I look up to see brown hair

The new guard approaches me with a frown

He asks why I place myself before such dangers

Leading the charge, leading men with my sword raised high

And all I can do is stare with a dropped jaw

His shaggy hair reminds me of when we first met as children

I take his sword and hold it to the sun, letting light reflect

Eyes squint at me through the rays like they did up at my window

He doesn't recognize the reckless spirit I have become as I forge my way forward

All he sees is that of a guard, who despises me for standing on my own

For refusing to be blocked by a wall of men who stand between me and my destiny

And so I laugh at him and his shaggy hair, for asking a question most are afraid to

I am unafraid of the death that may wait for me, the death I would share with my men

For "Long ago a young boy told me I must fight my own battles. So I Slew My Own Dragons."
