"For the last time, we only have so much man power." His stern expression and tone of voice said more than his spoken words had. An underlining message he wasn't explicitly delivering bubbled under that carefully chosen phrase.
"All the better reason to put me on a case Sir; helping in some way is better than none at all." There's a bite to your words. Standing alone in the see through office of the Captain's was nerve racking at the least. His intense aura focused solely on you. And just as any bystander peering into that microscope of a room could see. They didn't need those glass walls to look through your guise of confidence; and neither did Fowler. But you held your ground. Refusing to sit down off the bat as a small demonstration of defiance. You demanded a case, in a professional way though of course. But with months of waiting, months of accepting his excuse that it wasn't the right time. You felt that you were ready; that you've been ready. And your obedience as well as your patience with the issue had worn through a long time ago. As the twinge of self doubt that had been writhing its way within your spine, was working towards your neck. It began heating your skin. Making you more frustrated as you try and stay composed. The hot itchy pin pricks of anger danced along your flesh. Pushing the feeling away, the grasp on your other hand tightening. Formal stance, squared shoulders, just like in the academy. It wasn't going to stop you. His doubts or your own.
"Listen, you're a promising detective, and a hard worker. I do see that, and I do appreciate it." The short quip of a compliment felt grating at best. "And I'm sure you think you can handle a case on your own but you're not ready. There's certain things they can't teach you in the academy. Real life experience being one of them. There's a surge of cases lately. And I can't risk throwing a new detective out into the water, especially when there's a tsunami sized shit show going on right now!" His hand hits the table as he stands. Eyes darting to the right, catching a few faces who were intrigued by his sudden peak in volume. "Then pair me with someone..-" Voice hitching your body moves forward on its own, taking on the challenge. "Anyone! I can't keep fetching coffee like i'm just some intern; I earned my place here just like everyone else!" His break in composure caused the fault in your own. As as the cracks were spreading so was your frustration. "Yet i'm treated like i'm just someone to take care of the grunt work, all I do is paper work and simple remedial tasks anyone can do, like I can't handle anything else.. like no one trusts me, like- like i'm a fucking android!"
They were in a dead stare, neither backing down. Your skin felt like it was on fire. As the seconds ticked by your head was in a whirlwind, and all the air was seemingly gone from your lungs. You very well might have of just lost your job; speaking to the captain of all people like that. It was a stupid move. Self doubt and regret immediately starting to encompass you. It was all over. Years of dedication wasted on one outburst. You pushed too hard. Searching his face for any fleeting signs of a future, there was nothing. Just the angry gnarled face of a man who was completely over your whiny entitled bullshit. In an attempt to save your ass you started back peddling, and fast. Gathering what air you could, your voice suddenly soft and remorseful. "S-sir i'm so sorry please forgive me, I lost my temper that was out of line" it was almost a whisper as eyes go to the desk pleading for something to focus on as your stance slackens as your shoulders cave in. His hands slide off the corners of the desk and he straightens his back. Sighing running a hand over his face massaging his eyes as if the mere sight of her hurt them. "For your sake i'm going to pretend you didn't just curse at a superior officer." Reclining back into his chair he taps the screen displayed out in front of him. Watching as he swipes and taps through a series of files. Is this him dismissing you? After a long pause you turn to leave but he speaks. "I don't have to remind you there's a civil war going on." He begins.
"It's more dangerous now than it's ever been. Ever since that stance they took with their leader; there's been big changes. And more are being implemented. And not everyone likes it. With new laws being passed and others being written it's a very sensitive climate out there. They didn't train you for this new world, hell they didn't train me for it. I never thought i'd be protecting the right's of a piece of plasti-.. the rights of an android. No one know's how to deal with it or in the right way. And I haven't put you on a case because of it. I've got every able body we have out there trying to contain this shit show. Over the last few months some officers have been attacked, some have said the wrong thing and in turn made a bigger mess of it. And you got put on the back burner. But it's our job to uphold the law. No matter our personal opinions, we protect those who are under it. And that's what we'll do. That's what you'll do, but not alone." His inhale of breath, and choice of words almost sound like a father scolding a child for stepping out of line. Yet you cant help but feel the hope he's so carefully instilling in you. "Working with a partner should be good for you. Get you some experience, at least." His words revitalize you. All the heat gone as fresh air fills your lungs lifting you up. A smile starts spreading across your features as his eyes meet yours again. "Don't get too excited" He flips the screen and your met with a profile. "Lieutenant Anderson?" Reading it with less enthusiasm then your face depicted a few seconds before, now contorting into a confused expression. "But, he's- well he already has a partner.." Eyebrows knit together trying to understand what the Captains implying. "That he does" with a flick the profile changes to that of a new one. "Model RK800. Or as lieutenant insists he be called, Connor." A small twitch hits the corner of his mouth as he sees your bewildered face. "They'll both be your partner. All three of you will take on more than one case at once. I told you all hands are on deck. And the latest crime solving detective from cyberlife; should be more than capable to pick up any slack a rookie can't handle." You're stunned. Taking in all the information that was just thrown at you. "Unless you don't think you could handle working with more than one partner that is; working with a-" Shaken from your haze by his abrupt silence, it tears you away from the profile meeting his steady gaze. "Fucking android"
