Nick's POV. ( for the whole story)

I watched as Gatsby walked up to my door. Wet from the rain as he stepped on my porch. I quickly opened the door for him.

"Good morning!" I quickly said as I tied my robe tighter around my waist. He didn't reply. I wasn't shocked. I motioned for him to come in. Though something felt different but it went without mention. He stood by the couch. He was looking around.

I mentally slapped myself. He needed a towel so he could sit on the couch. I ran to grab one. When I came back out he hadn't moved an inch. I went to set the towel out for him.

"No, let me Old Sport." He smiled as he took the towel and laid it out. He unbuttoned his suit and sat. The blue suit was a deeper blue now due to the rain.

"So What brings you to my little house today? Tea?" I questioned as I walked to the kitchen.

"That would be lovely, Old Sport." He said as he looked to be lost in thought. He stared out my glass doors toward the dock. That damn green light still fascinates him. Without asking I knew he was thinking of Daisy. He didn't have to tell me how to make his tea, I had it committed to memory. Two sugar cubes and honey always Earl Grey. I made the tea and sat down. I handed him his tea. He thanked me and the silence returned.

I laid back on the other couch and watched the waves. I was aware that he needed some time before  he was ready to talk.

About half an hour of silence rolled by we had drank about four cups of tea each. I felt uncomfortable so I grabbed to the pot to make more tea. Jay grabbed my arm quickly.

"No more tea, please sit back down I have a matter to discuss, old sport." He tried to smile and held my arm. His smile seemed forced.

"Of course, James." I quickly returned to my seat. He had let my arm go. He looked a little confused. "Sorry Jay I meant no offense."

"Oh no, no offense taken it's actually quite pleasant. You are the only one I trust. I hope that isn't over stepping?" He questioned as his smile grew.  My gut twisted. That smile was the one thing that made me go crazy.  It wasn't till much later would I learn what  that had meant.

"Not at all. I agree with you. I only trust you as well. May I call you James or would you prefer Jay?" It was hard to say but it was the truth. I returned a smile. I had never trusted anyone as much as I trusted him. I was hoping I could even call him my friend.

"James is just fine and I can call you Nicholas?." He said.

"Oh yes, of course. Friends?" I questioned.

"Absolutely, only the best of." He paused. "You know what? I have never actually had a real friend before besides Dan Cody he was more a mentor than anything." He said quickly. I was shocked.

"No way? You?" I questioned in disbelief.

"Yes. Everyone just stays cuase I have money you know. But you are different you care about what I am doing. That means a lot." He laughed.

"Wow. I am honored. I have to admit you are a pretty great friend." I smiled and sighed and laid back down.

He smiled as a thought that he enjoyed crept into his mind. We stopped talking again. In my gut I knew what he was going to say next. My compliment. I knew he had to bring it up. Let me start the conversation I thought. I took a deep breath.

"They're a rotten crowd. You're worth the whole damn bunch put together." I stated it again it was still as true as the first time I said just two days before. He looked over at me.

"That's what I wanted to talk about." He paused. "I just. Well thank you it meant a lot to me." He smiled. "I wanted to invite you for a swim, Nick? Say tomorrow at noon? How's that sound?" He almost beamed.

"I love to but I have work tomorrow." I said. I honestly was disappointed. I would love nothing more than an afternoon with Gatsby enjoying life.

"I can pay you for how much money you would lose from not working that day?" He scooted to the edge of his seat. I could tell that this meant a lot to him. I watched glimmer in his eyes sparkle.

"That won't be necessary. I would love to join you for a swim. I mean no one wants to have their first swim in their pool alone?" I smiled. I could tell he was pretty excited.

"Sounds great I will come for you at ten in the morning. We can have breakfast and then swim. What do you like for breakfast, Old Sport?" He stood as walked toward the door I followed.

"Umm whatever you want works for me." I smiled. It made me happy just to see him with that genuine and hopeful smile. We talked for hours about the past for a while he wanted to know about my childhood and what I wanted to do with my life.

"Okay, see you tomorrow. Ol... Nick." I noticed the rain haven't given up yet. I tossed him an umbrella. He caught and bowed his head and opened it.  He stepped off the porch.

"See you later, James." I said as I waved from the doorway. I watched he walk till I couldn't see him.

It was about four PM then. I called my work and let my boss know I wouldn't be in tomorrow. I also assured him I would be in the day after.  He wasn't worried about it. I was more excited than I ever realized at that moment.

I should call and let Gatsby know I got off work. I pick up the phone and dial him.

"Hello?" Gatsby answered the phone.

"Hey, it's nick. I just wanted to call let you know that my work is letting me have the day off tomorrow." I smiled as I twisted the cord of the phone.

"That's great. I should let you know I only have few people that work at the house now." He said.

"Oh why is that?" I questioned a little confused.

"Well, I have decided that I should have people I trust working for me. I kept the pool cleaner who can also do the garden, Mr. Hertz my driver, the chef and someone to guard the gate. Well I have six guards still." He laughed.

"That's great,James. Well I should go I am in the middle of this great book." I smiled as I look at the book on my table. I was so glad I had started reading again.

"Oh of course. Before you go May I ask which book? Maybe I have read it?" He questioned.

"Oh well I doubt it. But it's called This Is the End By Chad King." I said into the phone. I wonder if he is up his that window looking out over my house?

"Well what Is it about?" He questioned.

"Is a book of someone's life in the post-apocalypse where a girl Is trying to survive. She goes through all this crazy stuff it's place in the 2035. There is zombies in it too." I smiled with pride. I liked like the book I had no idea why I wanted him to like it as much as I did.

"That sounds like a really good read. What store did you pick it up from?" He seemed intrigued.

"I got it from the little one next to Carmen's coffee house." I said as I stepped out the door with the whole phone it my hand. I looked up and he wasn't there. I went back inside.

" That place makes great coffee." He paused. "Want to accompany me?" He asked.

"To get coffee?" I breathed out my heart had stopped.

"Yes and to get the book so I can read it." I could tell he was smiling.

"Sounds great." I never knew then but tomorrow would change my life forever.
