7 year old Annabeth lay her head down on 13 year old Thalia's lap while Luke sat in the corner of their small hideout, watching them. Although Thalia hardly showed her soft side, she often showed it for Annabeth. The soft humming from Thalia's mouth made Annabeth's eyes flutter shut in sleep. Luke observed, finding himself mesmerized by Thalia even more, seeing this side of her. Not that he didn't admire her otherwise, but this made him see exactly how perfect she was. And so he vowed that he would never let anything happen to her.

That's why he became so bitter. Because he let something happen to Thalia, something he blamed the gods for.
