Ardennes- a thickly wooded region in France and Belgium (mid-north east) during the battle of France, the Wehrmacht army group A used the region to flank the allied forces, who had not defended the area well.

BEF- British expeditionary force, basically the British army.

Boche- British nickname for german soldiers.

Chausseurs ardennais- Belgian infantry formation who were tasked with defending the ardennes in 1940.

Hun- antiquated name for german soldiers or kaiser Wilhelm II.

Jerry- British nickname for german soldiers.

Krauts- another such nickname.

Lieutenant- universal low officer rank. Lieutenants usually led platoons and companies on the frontlines.

Liverwurst- german sausages made out of liver.

Maginot line- massive defensive fortifications built by the french along the border with Germany. Supposed to be impenetrable.

Mathilda- a common British medium tank.

NCO- non-commissioned officer.

OKW- oberkommando der Wehrmacht, or the german high command.

Panzer vor- 'all tanks advance' german military command. But you knew that if you watch girls und panzer.

Personal vendetta- officers on opposing sides  could declare this upon one another as a statement of revenge. This would mean that there was the equivalent of a price on the recipient's head, and the only honourable way to get out of it was to get discharged from service. Not common at all, as it can potentially  bypass aspects of the Geneva convention should either party fall into enemy custody.

Royal tank regiment- a british armoured regiment, it is the oldest in the world and answers directly to the monarch. They are nicknamed 'the black mafia'.

Sandhurst- the british army's top military academy, where officers recieve their training. Famous for its traditional values and polo playing.

Subaltern- officer of captain rank or below.

Wehrmacht- name of the german army from 1934 until 1945.
