Chapter 3

Riley

I glanced down at my phone and read the text that was forwarded to me from Ryder.

PARTY AT NATE'S HOUSE TONIGHT

Nate...? I wracked my brain to think of who he was and I think I remembered Luke saying something about him being on the team. I sighed and laid on my back, sinking into the fluffy pillows of my bed. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the rare moment of silence as I started to drift to sleep. But of course there is no silent moment in my life as my phone rang.

"Hello?" I said tiredly.

"Hey, Riles." Luke said happily.

"What's up, Mr. Bates?" I said teasingly.

"Are you going to Nate's party tonight?" He asked.

"Probably not." I said.

I heard him gasp on the other end. "The Riley Evans turning down a party!? What has the world come to?"

I chuckled. "I'm just not feeling it tonight."

"Taylor's going to be there and I'm going to need your help. Please come?" He asked.

I chewed my lip for a moment. "I'm sorry, Luke - "

"Please, Riley?" He begged. "You know I can't do this on my own."

"No, Luke." I said once more.

"Please -"

"No." I interrupted and then hung up the phone. I sat up and groaned. I didn't want to be so harsh with him, but I just did not want to go to that party.

If you don't go, he's going to be eaten alive by the wolves.

I gritted my teeth. "He'll be fine."

Don't lie to yourself.

"I'm not."

He's not going to survive the night if you don't go.

"Luke's going to be just fine on his own!" I yelled out to no one in particular. I let out a strangled sigh and buried my face in my hands.

"Get a grip, Riley."

I fell back down onto the bed and willed myself to go to sleep to shut the voice in my head up.

--

I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing on my stomach. I picked it up and saw that Luke was calling me again.

"Hello?" I said.

"Riley, I need you." He slurred.

"Are you drunk?" I asked him seriously.

"Nah! I've only had seven, maybe eight drinks." He said, giggling at the end.

"Luke." I groaned.

"Oh, hey, I saw Taylor and she's so pretty." He slurred again. "Her dress is so flowy!"

I face palmed myself.

He then turned serious. "Mesmerizing..." He whispered.

"You're an idiot." I said, deadpanned.

"No, I'm Luke!" He said, laughing hysterically.

Oh so he was a childish drunk...lovely.

"I know who you are Luke." I said.

"And you're Riley! My beautiful, incredible, sexy Riley...oh so sexy."

I giggled at him despite the fact that he was drunk off his ass.
