"Bzzt!" The alarm clock rang. Brian, groaning, shut it off, and climbed out of bed. Looking outside, rain was falling in buckets. The weather seemed to match his mood perfectly. Gloomy. He then proceeded to start his day. He shuffled towards the bathroom, and brushed his teeth. Next, he grabbed a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt, and began to put them on. He walked towards the center of his apartment, and grabbed his badge off his couch. Putting it around his neck, he checked his Springfield XDs for rounds, and holstered it. Heading out, he put on his black leather jacket, and his James Dean style sunglasses. Outside, people went to and fro, huddling underneath umbrellas. Brian just ignored it and hopped in his 1970 Dodge Charger. The engine revved, and he sped onto the highway towards the police station. While driving, he checked his radio for any problems. "Nothing. Nothing. NOTHING," he grumbled, while changing channels.
Eventually, he gave up, and continued his long, monotonous, drive to work. When he got there, he saw other officers' cars parked. Parking his, he got out, and noticed a group of them clustered around something. He walked towards the huddle, and saw a tiny, navy blue Peel P50, with a 1950's style front, and the Government's Seal on the door. Oh boy, Brian thought. Looks like we have a government lackey today. He then headed inside.
Meanwhile, Toby Mc Toadstool was entering the police HQ, wearing a navy blue suit. While walking, he noticed multiple superheroes, and villains, being detained, or questioned. Feels good to know that we've done our jobs properly, he told himself, smiling. Toby was the public face of the UN's Amethyst Accords.
The name was taken from the most dangerous juvenile superhero out there, Amethyst. After they destroyed a library, every global superpower was on high alert. She was the main reason he was here, at a police station, with a bunch of morons laughing at his (Government Issued) car. Pushing his displeasure out of his mind, he approached the secretary, and cleared his throat. "Ahem! Good morning! I have a meeting with the chief of police and the D.A?" he asked. The secretary, not looking up, grunted, and cleared him in. He then walked towards the chief's office, where both him, and the D.A, were inside. "Good morning gentlemen. Thank you for allowing me to be here," he greeted. "Honour's all mine," the chief replied. "In a few minutes, our best officer will be joining us" As soon as he spoke those words, the door opened, and Brian stepped through.
"Now then," Toby began, as Brian sat down. "I shall explain my reason for this visit. As you know, 4 heroes had a brawl in a public library. The result was 5 million in damage repairs, and the death of 2 government diplomats. Since then, the major intelligence agencies have put out red alerts for them." Toby then pulled out a file folder, titled: Vivo Incident: Collected Data. He passed out a couple copies to the other three. He then continued. "The CIA and MI6 have also created portfolios, containing important information." Opening his folder, he read the contents.
" Suspect #1: Amethyst. Wanted for: Destruction of Public/Private property, Second degree murder, and Failure of following Federal Orders. Real Name: Unknown. Age: 14. Abilities: Electric Manipulation, Hyper Acceleration, Shape Shifting, Apparition." He then moved on.
"Suspect #2: Triple 4. Wanted for: Destruction of Public/Private property, Second degree murder, and Failure of following Federal Orders. Real Name: Unknown. Age: Unknown. Abilities: Expert Marksman, Enhanced Agility, A-Grade Engineer." Toby then read another folder.
"Suspect #3: Debil. Wanted for: Destruction of Public/Private property, First degree murder, and Failure of following Federal Orders. Real Name: Debil. Age: 14. Abilities: Expert Marksman, Recklessness, Stupidity, A-Grade Engineer Extremely Thick/Tough Skull, Excellent Driving Skills" Finally, he read the last file.
"Suspect #4: Steven Seal. Wanted for: Destruction of Public/Private property, and Failure of following Federal Orders. Real Name: Steven Peterson. Age: 14. Abilities: Manipulation/Control of Energy Loops, Phoenicia Control, Master of Mystic Arts." Closing the folder, Toby looked at his audience. Each one of them were deep in thought. Toby decided to continue. "Now that you know this, you understand the threat they have on our national security. Therefore, the World Leaders have entrusted me with choosing one of the best, and brightest local law enforcement officer to help," He finished, waiting for an answer. Like he planned, Brian asked, "Help with what?" Toby turned to him, and answered, "Killing them." Brian, surprised by the calm tone of his voice, spoke up again,"Okay... And who might this lucky person be?" Toby, with a smile, replied. "You."
Brian stormed out of the office, smoke visibly appearing from his ears. "Wait!" Toby called, while blocking his path. "I believe you don't understand the complexity of the situation. Forget your morals. This is a cha-" he pleaded, before he was winded by a blow to his stomach.
Angrily looking down at him, Brian glared, the intensity of a burning coal in his eyes. "Listen," he spat, while pointing a menacing finger at Toby.
"I don't care whether you think superhumans are freaks, or menaces to your Utopian dream, but I know that all they want, is to live their lives in peace. And I refuse to hunt down those who are just different. I refuse to be another one of your government lackeys. Now, get out of my way." Then, pushing Toby aside, he headed out to the front entrance, for his daily patrols. All while Toby watched him, with confusion and rage fighting in his eyes.
Brian sped down the street, his mind replaying Toby's line again and again. Forget your morals. Yeah right, he thought. Like I'm going to do that again. When Brian first started out, he was a trigger happy hitman. Removing obstacles in the way of order, or, in the way of corrupt, greedy politicians. Whether it was immigrants, superhumans, innocent civilians. Whoever was the enemy, whoever was in his line of sight, he would take care of. And he did. It was well paying, and somewhat satisfying. Until he met her. She was a young, ambitious person. Long haired and friendly, yet strong and independent as well. Because of her, he now had his moral code. And he would honour that code, until his dying breath. Looking at his watch, he realized that he was now off duty. He decided to head to the local bar, and have a couple rounds.
In the bar, Brian had just finished a bottle of Corona, and was watching the rain fall down. He enjoyed the quiet; it allowed him to think about his current state in the world. "Good evening sir!" Brian scowled, and looked away from the source of the voice. Toby entered the bar, grabbed a stool, and sat down beside Brian.
"One Tourtel, please," he told the bartender. Getting his drink, he turned towards Brian, and began to speak.
"I believe we haven't met. My name's Toby Mc Toadstool, former Vigilante, and public face of the Amethyst Accords." He then extended a hand in greeting. When he didn't get a response, he took a couple of sips from his drink. "Whatever you want, make it quick," Brian grumbled. " I'm just here to have a drink," Toby lied. "Why are you really here?" Brian asked, his police mode kicking in. "I'm here to apologize," Toby replied. "And, to get a malt." He then continued drinking. "Thanks," Brian told him. "I'm also here to ask you if you'll change your mind," Toby added. Brian rolled his eyes, and started to turn away. "Look, I can understand that our beliefs don't agree with yours, but I need you on this. Out of the millions of trained officers in the world, I chose you. This is a mission of utmost importance. You'll be promoted, honored, and you'll receive a government boost of... 4.6 billion dollars! And all you need to do is travel the world, looking for the four most wanted people on the planet. How could you say no?" "Because," Brian responded, growing tired of Toby's rant. "I'm not a Secret Agent, a Spy, or a Government Lackey. I'm a Calgary police officer. Local's what I'm good at. Not this Mission Impossible junk. So, I'm sorry, but I can't accept your offer." A drop of sweat formed on Toby's head. "What?" Brian asked, somewhere between confused and annoyed. "The thing is... your boss, the D.A., and I all signed the forms," Toby explained. "So... you are kinda forced to partake in this operation, or you'll be arrested." "WHAT?!!" Brian exclaimed. "So I'll see you tomorrow, 7:00 am, at your apartment," Toby added, before paying for his drink, and heading out the door.
Rubbing surprise from his eyes, he turned to the bartender. "Hey bartender, I'm gonna need a few more rounds."
