*Introduction*
He looked to the left, and then to the right, making sure the hallway was empty from any dangers of interceptors before they proceeded to creep slowly and quietly in it. Paranoid even when they knew they shouldn’t be; they couldn’t help but glance in every cell, checking if anyone – or anything - was in it that might tell on them and ruin everything and their chances of escaping this Hellhole. Luckily, this part of the facility was empty. Their senses were in high alert, the tiniest of sounds startling them. But then again, they couldn’t afford to be caught, not again. This time, they would be put in a more secured cell … or put down. They definitely needed to get out of here as soon as possible, and this was their only chance. At least, they weren’t sure they were going to get another.
Strangely enough, they slid into another dirty, bloodstained hallway undetected. They were thankful though, nonetheless. The unbearable stench burned their noses; all of them scrunching their noses in disarray, aggravation and complete disgust. Their eyes watered from the sting, they could almost feel the metallic taste of the blood at the back of their throats. Yet they continued to advance; in spite of their senses plea to go back before they were caught and punished. They all wondered who all this dry blood that lay on the cells’ floor belonged to. Even the bars and the walls of the cells had dry blood splattered on them. They couldn’t tell if the blood was human, or of something else; it was all mixed together to make one seriously menacing smell that could put an elephant to its rest. If they didn’t get out of there fast; they wouldn’t make it till the end.
But it only seemed to get worse with every step they took; the smell would increase and become more irritating to their fragile noses. The only thing they were clinching onto was the hope of breathing in fresh, blood-free air that kept them going. Of once again, smelling the beautiful fragrance of roses and flowers and trees, the soil beneath them and the feel of it between their toes, the taste of clear, uncontaminated water and the different foods there is, the ability to run freely wherever they want without any boundaries or restrictions. And most of all, freedom; that long awaited feeling was finally within reach (or a few steps) and all they had to do was grasp it (or creep to it). And this time; they would never let go of it. Never. Even if it killed them; because death was much, much, much more merciful than what would happen to them if they stayed here.
And there it was, the barricaded metal double-doors that stood between them, and absolute freedom. All they had to do was go through it, and this nightmare would be over. For good.
They glanced at each other, all of them knowing what to do next without even saying it. It didn’t need to be said out loud; it was as clear as crystal.
They all wanted this too; he could see it in the gleaming and glistening of their eyes, and the way their hands turned into tight fists. Confidence radiated off of them. But God knew, nobody wanted this more than he did. Nobody loved freedom and the feel of it as much as he did, nobody appreciated it as much as him, nobody but him knew what was going to happen if they didn’t get out of this place before the next full moon. He, and he alone, could get them out of there; because after all, he was Alpha, and it was up to him to ensure the survival of his pack.
They all nodded at him. It was all he needed to know: that they were ready for this, and to confirm his next action. They had to be ready, there was no other chance or opportunity, only this.
He turned around to face his way out, and with one deep long breath, he bolted to the doors alongside his pack members.
The alarms went off.
