Song of the chapter:

Breakfast at Tiffany's (Cover by Hollie Cooper)

---

---Next Day---

"Milk.. Check. Ragu.. Check. Bread.. Check," I mutter as I go down the list of items on the grocery list.

Apparently, my mom doesn't careabout my anniversary and wants me to do her favors rather than spend the day with my boyfriend. Gee, thanks mom.

I continue to walk until I abruptly bump into something. Looking  up, I find that it's more of a someone rather than a something. And that someone is a teenager, around my age.

"Oh, um.. Nicole?" He initiates the conversation. Ahh, so he's from school, I knew he looked familiar.

"Yeah? Luke, is it, right?" I think about apologizing for bumping into him, but decide against it. I've been showing too much of my true self lately for my own good.

"Yeah, Luke. I have a question to ask you, it's pretty important?"

"Umm, sure but just try to make it quick please?" I really should be getting back home so I can head over to Jack's.

"Okay," he says with a smile.

The next thing he does surprises me. He gets down on one knee and looks up to me with a smile on his face.

"Don't worry, I'm not proposing," he says with a chuckle. I release a breath of relief and wait for him to continue.

"You'll say, we've got nothing in common,

No common ground to start from,

You'll say the world has come between us."

"Our lives have come between us, still I know you just don't care," he

sings. Is he seriously singing to me, on one knee, in the middle of the drinks aisle at Publix in public? He knows how to embarrass himself, that's for sure.

"And I said, what about breakfast at Tiffany's?

She said, I think that I remember that film,

And as I recall, I think we both kinda liked it.

And I said, well that's one thing we've got."

By now a crowd has started to form around us, leading back to the two openings at the end of the aisle. My cheeks flush red with embarrassment as I take in the fact that all of the eyes are on us. You'd think I'd be used to being the center of attention, but no. The complete opposite actually, I hate being in the spotlight.

An older woman near the front of the crowd puts her hand up to her heart and wipes a stray tear from the corner of her eye. Her eyes cloud over as she reminisces over something. I'm guessing this is an older song, as I'd never heard it before, so it probably brings back memories for her.

"I see you, the only one who knew me,

But now your eyes see through me,

I guess I was wrong.

So what now?

It's plain to see we're over,

And I hate when things are over,

When so much is left undone."

I'm not going to lie, he does have a nice voice. Not radio-worthy or anything, but I wouldn't mind listening to him sing more often. It was deep, but not scary deep. And it wasn't too manly, nor was it too boyish, but just in the middle. Every once in a while a little rasp caught onto his words, giving them an even better sound.

"And I said, what about breakfast at Tiffany's?

She said, I think that I remember that film,

And as I recall, I think we both kinda liked it.

And I said, well that's one thing we've got."

He finishes the song and looks up at me again. He has a slight blush on his cheeks and a smile tugging on his lips. His eyes are waiting for something and his breath is held in. He is still kneeling on the ground.

"What was... that?" It isn't the nicest thing to ask after that, but I was still confused out of my mind.

"Will you, Nicole Hill, go out with me?" The crowd that had only grown over the past few minutes chorused with 'awes' and coos of 'how sweet he is'.

"Well.. Luke, I mean.."

"Say yes!" a small voice calls from behind me. I turn to see a young girl hugging her father's leg looking at me with adoration in her eyes. The crowd behind her murmurs in agreement.

I can't say yes, though..

"Luke, I have a boyfriend. I'm sorry, I won't... I can't.. No, sorry."

A look of disappointment crosses his face. He mutters an 'okay' and stands up fully. The crowd slowly dissipates, taking Luke with them, and knocking down a few Rootbeer cans in the process.

"Cleanup in aisle 9!" An anouncer calls the store through the loudspeaker. I grab my last items and slowly walk to the checkout counter. Everyone gives me looks filled with disappointment as I look away in shame. It was my choice, they have no say in my love life.

I drive the rest of the way home with the music off ad my mind racing with the previous events. It was sweet, but I barely know him, why would he ask me out?

I walk through my door, sigh, and drop my keys onto the wooden coffee table situated next to the door, causing a jingle from the keys rubbing against eachother.

"How was the store?" my mother asks coming into the living, grabbing the remote, and plopping down onto the leather couch.

"It was.. fine."

Awe, poor Luke. Do you think she made the right decision? What do you think Jack will do for their anniversary?

OH, and I'm shamelessly advertising my friend's book. Please go check out I Don't Dance (Hayes Grier) by kristen_bieberr.
