“We should be unseen in this split in the mountains. “ Dustin looked at me, his eyes showing along with his smile. He pointed up ahead, his 10A ranking showing on the front of his armor. “Should take less time too.”
I nodded and looked down at my ranking, the simple 9A showing on my red shirt. “What if they come from the top of the cracks? We won’t have anywhere to hide.”
“I wouldn’t worry too much about that Exia. Those lower class demons won’t stop whoring around with the others in their clan to even notice us until it’s too late.” He grabbed the hilt of his hooked blade at his waist. “Even if they did find us it wouldn’t be hard to wipe out their numbers. We are the Kings children after all. The rest of the army is really just for show.”
I laughed and reached to pull out my scythe, knowing we were getting closer to the enemy camp. “Whatever happens here today know that we shall feast till the days grow old when we return.”
Dustin ran his free hand through his spiked hair, his blade changing as he used magic to turn it into a hooked staff. “Only a few mor-.”
Silence broke out as red and white being began to appear on the cliffs edge overhead. I Shoved Dustin out of the way, a beam of golden light hitting the spot where he had been. “It’s an ambush take cover and try to get their numbers down!”
It took little time for all but a handful of our army to be slaughtered like animals, the few remaining heavily injured and running low on magic. Dustin was breathing hard as he tried to heal a wound on his stomach, the look on his face giving the insight of a person on the edge of death. “Retreat!”
His voice didn’t carry very far, his breathing not allowing him to even carry his voice past a whisper. The last bit of the army finally started to run back, but was met by troops that had circled around. “It’s been an honor serving you men.” Dustin stepped forward, a golden light charging around the enemy forces.
On the verge of death myself I began to not care about the risks, the only thing left to do was maybe buy enough time for the other to gain the upper hand. I leaped in front of Dustin, using all my remaining power and life force to blind the enemy and shield my comrades.
A weird surge of power began to run through my mind. A sense of energy barely being tapped showing itself to me. I was beginning to become drunk from all the new power. The mark on my chest simply ceased to exist.
The light was the last thing I saw before ash and bones layered the ground. Dustin the only other living being next to me. His hand traced the sensitive flesh around my right eye. “What happened brother? Why is your ranking gone? Why did you, how did this happen?”
