When I woke up, the only thing there was, was silence. After the silence cleared, I could hear a collection of different pitched beeps and other various sounds. Even before I opened my eyes, I could tell that I was in a hospital room.
I opened my eyes and looked to the left and to the right of my hospital bed. I could see the maze of wires that connected me to the beeping and sounds that broke the peaceful silence that I was able to slowly wake up to.
I looked straight ahead towards the door which has a small window next to it. Looking through the window, I could see my parents, Fay, and Vaughn outside. My parents were sitting in chairs, crying while Fay and Vaughn were pacing back and forth in front of my door. Both of them looked very worried. They kept looking inside the window. I don't think they were able to see that I was awake yet because Fay and Vaughn kept looking in to see if I was awake and kept shaking there heads. Each time they di that, it made my parents cry even harder. I do not understand what could cause them to do this. I do not even know how long I was asleep for. The last thing I remember was getting off of the bus while Vaughn called out goodbye to me. After that, it was all a blur.
Vaughn looked in again and his eyes widened. He must have motioned for Fay to look in because his head dissappeared behind the wall as Fay's hand appeared, followed by her head. She shook her head and kept motioning at Vaughn to look in again. I could see her lips moving but I could not hear anything.
Just then, I saw Vaughn's head and Fay's head peek in at the same time. I tried to sit up but weakness took over my body. I fell at about two inches off of my bed. That was enough for them to realize that I was officially awake. They turned around and Fay started jumping up and down. My parents immediately stood up and stared into the window. I gave a weak smile and attempted to wave to them. That attempt did not end well.
Fay and Vaughn started making gestures towards the door. My parents nodded and they rushed in. Fay ran in carrying a teddy bear and a bunch of balloons. Vaughn was fast walking right behind her bringing behind an even bigger stuffed animal rabbit and a bouquet of flowers.
"Oh my god Sunday! We were so worried about you! In a few hours-" Fay was cut off by Vaughn's hand covering her mouth.
"What would have happened?" I asked. My voice sounded weak. I tried sitting up again and this attempt was worse than the first. I looked over towards my mom and dad and they were just staring at each other, anxious and worried. "Mom, dad, you can tell me. Vaughn, take your hand away from Fay's mouth. I have a right to know. This is most likely about me so I would like to know what might have happened to me. Now what happened?"
Vaughn slowly took his hand away from Fay. He slowly took a step back and grabbed the ballons and stuffed bear from Fay's hands. He walked towards the left corner diagonal from the hospital bed. There was a collection of stuffed animals, balloons, and flowers. Some of the flowers started dying and some of the balloons started floating down near the ground.
"Well, Sunday," my dad began. "You have been out for a pretty long time. The machine that was keeping you alive did not exactly seem to be working too well. Your health was deteriorating. They were going to pull the plug on your machine."
"Wait a minute, how long was I out for?" This was getting worse and worse than I thought it was.
My mother stepped forward and grabbed a hold of my hand. She kneeled down next to my bedside. "Three months. You were out for three months."
My whole world just fell apart. I missed midterms. I missed the end of winter. It's now spring and I missed the whole beginning. It is probably already up to the end of the third quarter. I tried sitting up again and just fell back again. My strength keeps failing me.
Vaughn walked away from the get well gifts and walked next to the opposite side of the bed than the one my mother was next to. He kneeled down the same way my mother did. "Sunday, it will all be okay. The most important thing is that you are awake now. Soon enough, you will hopefully get your strength back."
My father sighed. "There is one very important detail that I may have failed to mention. The day that your seizure occurred, you underwent an operation to try and stop the seizures. You need to go through a series of four more because of this. The seizure you had was extremely severe. It could have killed you. Had it not been, for Vaughn running off the bus and calling 911, you probably would not even be here right now."
"When is the next operation?" Today is just a day of new discoveries and terrifying information.
"Since you have woken up, I think tomorrow. I will have to check with Doctor Rivera again."
"What caused the seizures to start up again?"
"We are not sure. We think it might have been you bumping into something, triggering something that caused the seizures in the first place."
That is when everything just stopped. According to what my father is saying, Vaughn killed me and saved my life in the same day. How is that even possible!?
Fay opened her mouth to ask something, but then closed it again. She nudged Vaughn in the back, causing him to speak instead. "Mr. and Mrs. Davis, is it okay if Fay and I have a couple minutes alone with Sunday?"
"That is perfectly alright, Vaughn," my mother said. "And you can call us Michael and Deborah." My dad put his arm around my mom and they walked out together. The door shut behind him.
Fay walked around and sat down on my bed. "How are you feeling Sunday?"
"Honestly, I am exhausted. I know I have been asleep for three months, but I feel like I can sleep for another three."
Fay placed a hand on my shoulder. "Do not worry. Everything will be okay."
"Thanks. I hope so."
At the same exact time, Vaughn and Fay said, "I know so."
I laughed and then I realized just how weak I was. "Thanks guys. Do you happen to know where Eiden is?"
"He is working. He recently got a job over at the hardware store. I will call him and let him know as soon as I leave." Vaughn gave her a look, almost as if he wanted her to leave. "You know what, I will go right now. Get some rest, okay?" She gave me a quick hug and then exited the room, leaving me alone with my savior and my murderer. I honestly do not know how to approach him. Should I be nice, or mean?
"Sunday, I am so extremely sorry. I feel like this is all my fault."
"Well it is!" I shouted as my voice wavered. Apparently I am taking the mean approach.
"I know. I feel absolutely horrendous. Just please listen to me."
"Listen, I need to get some sleep because of this procedure tomorrow. Can you please let me get some rest?"
He had already started talking but I was not listening. I had already closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
