"I guess it's just my woman's intuition. Every woman has one, you know."-Carolyn Keene ____________________________________________________________
It is said that in most cases of child abduction there are two general categories on the broad spectrum of the topic. They are described as such; Family abductions, where a family member; such as an Uncle, Cousin or even a court separated parent, takes a child without the primary guardian's permission. And there is also Nonfamily abductions which describes a kidnapper being someone who is a stranger to the child, or merely acquaintances. Thus was the case with Mackenzie Anderson, who despite her better judgement had just screamed for help.
However, it wasn't a scream that woke Sidney up, but the sound of her Mother's old truck pulling into the driveway. Sidney grabbed her phone and checked the time. It was 3:45, she also looked at the five texts and three missed calls she had.
One text was from her mother reading, "Sorry, there was an accident on the backroads. They needed the extra hands. Thank you for keeping an eye on Dylan and I'll be home before your shift at work." Sent at 2:14.
The other texts and missed calls were from her best friend Kathleen Gryer who was currently staying with her grandparents in some little town outside of Detroit. It had become a somewhat of a known fact that you don't make plans with Kathleen for any vacation or school holiday because she's never in town. Her texts where a jumble of, "UGH I wish your mom would have let you come with me" and "I miss you, call me" and "I'm bored as hell." Sidney chuckled and texted Kathleen:
"You've only been gone for three days, lmao. I'm about to head to work, I'll call you on my break. I love you."
Sidney then noticed that Mackenzie hadn't texted her back. Sidney couldn't help the way her stomach knotted at this, but she brushed it off as Mackenzie was probably just busy with her friends.
Within the next few seconds Mrs. Anderson walked through the door. Small red spots covered her previously lavender scrubs. "Mom." Sidney said gesturing to what Sidney assumed was blood on her clothes. Mrs. Anderson looked down at her clothes and the back at her two children, smiling at her little boy who was still curled up against Sidney fast asleep. Sidney carefully stood up and placed the little boy's head on the pillow next to her.
"Hey Sid. You getting ready for work?" Sidney nodded and walked over to her mom and gave her a half assed hug. Mrs. Anderson was a nurse at the Millstone General Hospital on the otherside of town. Cheryl Anderson, in herself was quite a mystery. A mystery amongst neighbors on how she practices nursing while raising three kids on her own. Her husband Patrick Anderson having died a few years previous in an airplane crash due to a sudden engine faliure, leaving Cheryl to raise their children.
Sidney dragged her feet back to her room, not really wanting to go to work today. She thought about calling in sick or say that her mom got called in and she had to watch Dylan. She then thought about Myron's firing her over this seeing as her shift was to close to get anyone to cover it. Sidney pulled her uniform shirt out of the dirty clothes and smelt it. Seeing that it smelt fine she threw it on, sprayed herself with perfume, pulled her hair in a ponytail and grabbed her keys. Walking back into the living room she kissed the still sleeping Dylan and waved to her Mom who took the pillow's spot under Dylan's head.
"Hey Sid, have you seen Mackenzie?" Mrs. Anderson asked, looking at the time slightly worried.
"She left with friends earlier, she probably lost track of time. I'm sure she'll be home soon."
Little did Sidney know, that Mackenzie had not in fact lost track of time, and wouldn't be returning home anytime soon.
