November, 1977
Both snow and rain had been falling on the little mountain town of Hoodoo Forks. Jill and Chuck's apartment was not far from either the dinner, the gas station, or the barn. The hardest part of Eilise's commute was up and down the slushy stairs to the apartment.
She had filled her car up with gas, but had yet to drive down to the ocean. There wasn't any reason to go anywhere. Anything she could wish for was within six blocks. Maybe I'll make it to the beach come spring, when the whether is warmer, she thought.
The pull out couch wasn't the most comfortable, but it sure beat sleeping in her car out in the cold. There was another apartment open in the building. By next week she would have enough money to put down the deposit plus the first months rent.
Tonight however, she was have a private party with her hosts to celibate her success.
"I love this music," Eilise said, downing her fourth glass of wine. Rod Steward played on the phonograph.
"I know," said Jill, grabbing Eilise by the hands and pulling her into the middle of the room. "Doesn't it just make you want to dance?"
The two women boogied in the middle of the living room while Chuck sat at the half bar drinking his glass of wine, watching them.
"Come on, Chuck," said Jill waving him over.
"I'm not quite feeling the urge to dance yet, if you know what I mean," he said.
"Well, damn it, bust out the blow then!" Jill shouted at him.
"Sure." Chuck smiled. "If we're going to party, we might as well party hardy." Chuck ran off to the bedroom and returned with a cigar box. He opened it up. The bottom of the box was mirrored and inside was a plastic straw from Zedla's Diner, a razor blade, a BIC lighter, and a plastic bag full of white powder.
Chuck dumped a few chunks of the powder onto the mirror and began crushing it up with the lighter. Eilise was intrigued by the mysterious substance.
"Is that acid?" Eilise asked.
Jill and Chuck both got a laugh at this.
"No," Jill said, "it's coke... Blow? Cocaine?"
"What does it do? Is it like acid?"
Eilise had been smoking weed for a while now. It had some effects on her, but it was very mild, barely noticeable. She had been wanting to try acid. From what everyone had told her about it, she thought that it might be able to help her get her magic back. Sometimes, when she smoked a bunch of weed, which she usually did after church, everyone did, she could almost feel it again. She could almost see through the veil the separated the normal world from the one of magic.
"No," Jill said, "it's not at all like acid. It just makes you want to dance."
"But I already want to dance," Eilise said.
"Then it will make you want to dance even more," she said, putting her hand on Eilise's cheek.
Chuck finished up separating the crushed powder into lines. He handed the straw to Jill.
"Laddies first," he said.
Jill whipped her hair back and to the side. She put the straw in her nose and plugged up her other nostril, making sure Eilise got a good glimpse of the process. She quickly snorted up one of the rails of coke. She passed the straw to Eilise while sniffing and squinting her eyes.
Eilise snorted up one of the rails. It had a biting sting inside her skull. She could barely see straight when she handed the straw to Chuck. Jill dipped two fingers in her glass of wine and held it up to Eilise's nose.
"Chase it down with some wine. Give it a sniff," she said.
Eilise snorted the drops of wine and it did help.
"There you go," Jill said wiping Eilise's face with her wet fingers. "How do you feel?"
Eilise had to think about it. There was definitively a surge of energy coming over her.
"Awake," Eilise said. "Like all my life I have been asleep and now I am finally awake. Damn, This music is so good!"
The three of them danced. When the record got to the end, the flipped it over and danced to the whole other side, then flipped it back to the front. Every song brought the three of them closer. The were rubbing up against each other and breathing heavily.
Chuck had his arms around both women by the waist. Jill was running her fingers though Eilise's hair. It felt soothing and reminded Eilise of Lahrlin and when she was a little girl. She felt a hot breath on her face. She opened her eyes in time to see Jill kissing her on the lips.
Eilise took a step back. It wasn't a sisterly kiss. Jill had kissed her the way a woman kisses a man. It didn't feel wrong, just unexpected.
"Oh boy," she said, catching her breath, "I'm so thirsty! How long have we been dancing? Is there any wine left?"
Jill put her hand up the side of Chuck's neck and kissed him on the other cheek.
"Chuck," she said, "be a dear and open another bottle."
Chuck nodded and left the room. Jill led Eilise over to the couch. She put her hand on Eilise's knee and resumed to run her fingers through Eilise's hair.
"Are you okay?" Jill asked.
"Yes... I just... This is new."
"Everything is the first time. You don't have to if you don't want to."
"I.. I don't know what I want." Elise would normally look to God in times like these, but she didn't want to.
Jill kissed her again. Again, Eilise body tensed and she went to back up, but only pressed back against the seat of the couch. She relaxed and kissed Jill back, putting her arms around Jill.
The only other person she had ever been with was William Johnson. Somethings felt the same, but much of it didn't. There was no magic, but it was soft and had a raw sexuality to it.
Jill slid her hand between Eilise's legs. Eilise began to buck up against it. Jill sat back and took her hand away from Eilise's crotch as Chuck re-entered the room. She smiled at Eilise, who was sheepishly straitening her clothes. Chuck handed each of them a glass of wine. He sat on the couch, on the other side of Eilise, and cheers-ed them.
Eilise gulped the wine down. She wiped her mouth.
