Chapter 4: Helpless
I never thought we would survive together as long as we did. Joshua and I stayed together in that shop for as long as we could, which wasn’t more than a week. We ran out of food eventually, and neither of us wanted to risk going out to get more. I first thought everyone was in a zombie-like state, but that seemed to be wrong. They were all fully aware of what they were doing, they even had all their memories. Each day, a few more would kill themselves, while others stayed behind to kill others. They would kill people like us and each other too. One day, as we stood upstairs in the dusty attic, I peered out the small window and watched in horror as someone, aware, like us, stood in the middle of the streets. The town looked harmless both day and night because people would hide in the shops and houses and wait for unsuspecting victims. I banged on the window to try to get his attention, but Joshua came over and pried my hands off it. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders and held my arms. We watched as dozens of people swarmed around the man and beat him to death. Then they all started fighting each other and eventually more of them were lying on the ground, dead, than walking away. I broke into sobs and my whole body shook as I cried. Joshua still held me in his arms and didn’t try to stop me from crying. Soon I felt tears on my shoulder where he rested his chin, silently crying. We stood together and shared our sorrows through the night, until the small light of dawn woke us up. We had to do something.
