I watch Ellen disappear into her room, swiftly and carefully. After my attention was off of her door, I put away my dishes and headed back into my room. Grabbing a book and connecting my phone to the Aux cord, I played some music to sync me with whatever book I'm reading and start skimming over the words. My body lay comfortably on the window sill, hearing the occasional breeze from outside. I won't lie, summer is a killer here, and I was more than aware that we were slowly heading into summer, meaning the the days and nights would be sweaty and mild 24/7.
After 20 minutes, the book slowly became less and less entertaining to read, and just like that, I was up once again, and seeing if there was anything more to do in the apartment. I watched through the window and gazed at all the small people who walked past, going on with their lives. Me and Ellen lived around the 2nd floor on a 10 story building. We didn't have neighbours besides our rooms so it was more than alright for us to blast music and dance. My soft stares we're suddenly thrown off by something odd in the crowds below. It seemed like there was a distant group, all together and wearing a patch on their arm that made them seem like they were some type of gang. Before i could get another look at them again, my door was knocked on and Ellen popped her head in, her eyes landing on me. "Hey, lets go get some noodles from the store." She said to me, opening the door more and stretching her arms in the air. "I don't feel like staying home today. Lets go distract ourselves for the next few hours or so!" She yawned and walked out to grab something to wear. It wasn't even 10 seconds and that suddenly all happened. Wowza. Quickly enough, I snatched up some nice Track Pants and a Singlet with Flannel and then exited the room.
Ellen was already there, wearing some waist high jeans, a shirt with her Zodiac sign on it, and her favourite bomber jacket. "Well? Let's goooo slow poke!" She said, already eager to leave this room. I beat her out the door after she quickly went to grab something back in her room. After waiting for a minute or so, she bounced out the door, adjusting her shoes and locking the door. "Lets go Ellen! Don't wanna hit crowds!" I shouted jokingly. Her face shuddered at the thought of being surrounded by too many people. Too much anxiety for her. She turned her head suddenly to look behind her, then turned back to me, smiling as pure as clear water. She haulted to my right side, grabbing my arm and dragging me to the elevator on the other side of the hallway. "Why are we going to this elevator??" I asked, already confused as she pressed the button to come. "Why not? Let's try something new (Y/N)!" She said energetically, her smile almost reaching both her ears. I miserably fail to hide my smile. Suddenly I remember the group from out on the street. 'I hope we don't knock into one of them' I think to myself, as the elevator arrives on our floor. I look back at the other elevator to see someone step out and see us, suddenly walking over to us, slowly yet steadily. All of a sudden, I'm pulled into the elevator with Ellen and the door shuts. The man speeds up but fails to make it to the elevator as we travel down. I turn to Ellen, obviously panicked about what just happened. She looks at me and smiles. "He can take the next elevator!" She replies, with a small chuckle at the end. Suddenly we're at the bottom floor, leaving the building. Me and Ellen wave at the receptionist, who smiles and waves back at us. We both walk out the doors and start walking uptown, looking around. My eyes are darting around, just in case we bump into one of those men I saw earlier. After a minute, I just disregard it and continue on with the day.
//Timeskip towards 2:00pm//
"And that's why I think he's interested in me." Ellen finally finished her gossip on something about a boy and their interests in one another. We continued to walk with one another, holding bags of food. "Well maybe that's true, but have you considered his girlfriend?" I question back to her. She crosses her eyebrows and looks straight ahead, mumbling something to me. "Yeah I don't this she's in the right with her ways of cheating on him. Poor bloke." I turn, obviously surprised that our conversation was getting let out on secrets. "Really?! She's cheating on him!?" I ask quickly, already excited for more. "Unfortunately, yeah... but of course I don't want to hint at him about liking him cause he's still in a relationship. I just think he deserves better, yaknow?" Ellen says, crossing her arms and nodding to herself. We continue to talk until we make it back to the apartment and walk in through the main doors. We greet the receptionist but she quickly stops us. "You guys got some packages today, want to grab them now?" She asks us kindly. Ellen smiles "Alright Amber (receptionist name), (Y/N), you want to take the bags up?" She asks. I nod and she hands me her bag to take to our room. I don't mind taking it really, I just prefer to get to my room faster. Before I can leave, Ellen suddenly stops me, her face reads that something is off. "(Y/N), how about I take the stuff upstairs? You sign the package." She says, quickly grabbing the bags out of my hands and jumping into the elevator. "J-just stay with Amber right now." She quickly says. Something isn't right. The elevator door suddenly close and take Ellen to our floor. I turn and head over to Amber, smiling at her as she smiles back. She brings me a notice to sign and and gives me the packages. One is a box, small enough to carry, big enough to struggle with and some smaller things. 'Probably Ellen's' I think to myself, bringing them to the elevator. Waiting for the elevator to get to the floor, a taller man stands next to me with his suitcase, obviously looking at me in concern. "Need a hand, (Y/N)?" He asks me. I look at him, almost confused at how he knows my name, but then suddenly I recognize him. "Oh! Mark! Yes please." I quickly answer, as he grabs the box from my hands. Mark was the man me and Ellen were talking about earlier, maybe he's here to talk to Ellen about something. The elevator door suddenly opens and we both step it. "What floor?" I ask him. He chuckles. "Same as you, silly!" I smile and press the number '8' button and the doors close.
As we go up, we start talking more and more, mostly about whats been going on recently. As we reach our floor, the doors slide open. We smile to see Ellen near the door, but our grins suddenly drop.She's just... Standing there. She looks in the distance and grips both of her hands tightly together but she's still just standing there. I walk over to her and come in front of her face, only to see her expression is.. sad? Nervous? Maybe even both. She's not even blinking. Mark then walks over next to me and notices her non existent stare. Mark motions me to open the door while he tries to get her attention, even with the box in his hands. She doesn't budge. I open up the door and we walk into the apartment and she barely reacts.
Something is very wrong.
