Chapter Four The Benchmark
Ashley looked at Kevin to see his reaction to this girl's words. He was still looking at the girl, but with an annoyed expression. His jaw was clenched and his gaze seemed to shoot bullets into the girl's head.
Ashley herself had been rendered speechless. She did not know what to think. Surely, if this girl was Kevin's girlfriend, he'd be helping her instead of trying to kill her with his gaze..?
Ashley did not really know how girlfriends and boyfriends acted around each other, but she had seen some movies. Her mind suggested that they might have been in a fight, but she still didn't even know who the girl was to him. Maybe she was just a friend, even though the girl's words didn't suggest that.
The girl walked towards Kevin, swaying from side to side. She reached his still body and slung an arm around his shoulder. Ashley noticed the discomfort on Kevin's face.
"What do you want?" he asked the girl, who was trying to get her face closer to his. He gently lifted her hand from his shoulder and let it lose, stepping away from her.
"You, baby..," the girl slurred, walking back to Kevin and this time, wrapping both her arms around his neck.
"I told you this morning Kelly, I'm gay." He stated as Ashley saw a small smile appear on his face, only for a moment.
"No, baby... I know you're not. Why are you talking to this girl then?"
"Well, can't a gay boy talk to a girl?"
"Not with those looks in his eyes..," she said as her eyes rolled to the back of her head and her legs wobbled a little before she began to drop down to the floor, but fortunately Kevin caught her before she fell down.
"Sorry," he said to Ashley, who was blushing a little due to what the girl-Kelly-had said.
"It's okay," she said. "Do you know her room number?"
"Yeah, let's take her," he replied, picking up the girl's unconscious body and slinging her onto his shoulder with only a soft groan to hint his discomfort.
Ashley felt helpless as she did not know how she could contribute. So, she decided to lead the way and make way for Kevin.
They entered the lobby and waited for the elevator in silence. When it came, a few girls strutted out and one of them winked at Kevin. Ashley was surprised to find her mind insulting the girl already, but she did not let any hateful words escape her lips. She silently entered the elevator and asked, "Which floor?"
"Fifth," he replied. "Same as you."
Ashley pressed the right button and pondered over the fact that this girl could be the 'friend' that had saved Kevin from getting caught the previous evening. Ashley found herself a little jealous again. However, she chose to push those hideous feelings away and concentrate on the task at hand.
When the elevator's doors opened, Ashley let Kevin walk out first so he could lead the way. She followed him to the end of the corridor and stopped in front of 505, which was barely two footsteps away from Ashley's room.
Ashley sighed and wished this girl wouldn't remember anything in the morning and that she could be a good neighbour to her. Sadly enough, though, she did not count on that.
Kevin was struggling to get the room's keys out of the girl's pocket. As he gave up, he said to Ashley, "Can you please get the keys out?"
Ashley decided to try, though it wouldn't be easy from her angle.
She reached out to the girl's pocket from under Kevin's right arm. Chills ran down her body at his closeness. She pushed her mind to concentrate on what she had to do, but his scent wouldn't let her. She forced her mind to pay attention, and when it finally did, she managed to get the keys out, somehow.
