This theory is one that is popular around the internet and has decent amount of evidence to back it up. Let's go over the evidence...
We can all agree that Dr. Strange gave up the time stone too easily, right?
Well, as the theory goes Dr. Strange has a plan to stop Thanos and he had to give up the time stone to do it.
In the beginning Strange said he'd let Tony die in order to keep the time stone safe. Then later on he easily gives it up to save Tony's Life. That was too fast for him to have a change of heart. And as he dusts away he tells Tony that giving up the time stone was the only way. Let's not forget that he only saw one future where they beat Thanos.
So, three major evidence points
1. Strange tells Tony that giving up the Time stone "was the only way"
2. Strange is the only one that saw a future where they won against Thanos
3. This Sorcerer Supreme saved Tony's life, this might be part of his plan
So let's discuss him keeping Tony alive. First of all, he could have let him die but he didn't which is suspicious and hinting that Tony is the center of Strange's plan(probably). So, Strange may have seen that Tony was vital to stopping Thanos.
So here's what I'm thinking;
1. Strange had cast a spell on Tony before he died cause maybe that is why he might've kept Tony alive. It may be a spell that reverses time when activated.
or
2. Tony may be vital to devising a plan to stop Thanos which would lead to victory
Whatever the case may be we will find out in Avengers 4
