I was so done with high school. Graduation day couldn't have come soon enough. All throughout high school, I was somewhat a loner, and I was absolutely ready to be rid of the constant social anxiety. I sat and waited to hear my name and just like in class, I felt myself doze off. When my group stood up, I jumped and walked with a huge smile on. I couldn't be more done with it all, the only problem was my stage fright. I managed to climb the steps and walk across the stage, take my diploma and the pictures. "Almost there!" I thought to myself, "So close!"and as I walked towards the end, I tripped. Just my damn luck, huh? I fell, stood up and got off the stage all in the span of five seconds. My eyes as wide as possible and my face as red as a tomato, I'm damn sure. Oh how I wish I could just cover my face and run! I couldn't have gotten out of the arena soon enough. My family congratulated me and didn't bother asking about my plans. No one even brought up the fall, as if they'd expected it to happen. Thank GOD for it too. The last thing I need is to constantly be reminded of how clumsy I get sometimes. Once I get home, I'll finally be free, as I've no future plans right now. I honestly just wanted to continue working at my restaurant server job and not be bothered. My bills were paid, my health was good, and nothing else mattered really. I was walking to my car when I saw a little white tab on the front. "Another ticket. Pfft, I need to pack a bowl and be left alone already."
As I strode closer, I saw it was lined with gold. Rushing, I reached out to pull it and I tripped on a pebble, hitting my face on the edge of my rear view mirror. I pulled my legs to my chest, tugging my dress down and groaned in silent pain. "That's it. Higher power up in the sky or whatever? Just send me a box of donuts and a joint, we'll call it even." As I turned to lift myself up, a pair of really strong, firm hands pulled me the rest of the way as I was caught by surprise. "Hey, hands off. I got it dude. Thanks but I'm good." Typical men. Always trying to rescue, as if we women can't stand up on our own. I looked up and took a step back and tripped on the same damn pebble again and almost instantly, the same hands slid around my waist to pull me upright before fully falling ... again.
"Are you drunk?" This very very masculine, throaty voice asked.
"No, no. Just surprised ... um. I'm sorry. I meant no disrespect sir... I ,um... was just... leaving." I clicked my tongue and pointed towards the car with my thumb," I just happened to be a cluts and bad in heels when I feel ... under attention..."
"It's no wonder you're falling everywhere. You definitely have my attention today. How's your head?" He tilted his head a little so that his chin and jawline was sharply defined and his lips curled into a gorgeous half smile that showed he had dimples-imagine if it were a full smile! He lifted his eyebrows as he eyes the red spot from hitting the mirror.
"Oh, that? Pfft. I'm fine, heh.."
"And the stage fall... and the third- half fall?" His smile grew, but he looked towards the ground before fully showing me. He stuck his hands in his pockets and awaited my response.
"Heh... I really got your attention. Uhm... who are you?" I bit my lip with embarrassment and prayed to any higher power listening to let me get these heels off ASAP!
"Who am I? Haha... I'm uhm. I'm James. I figured leaving a flattering note on your car would be anonymous and all, but I guess I didn't want to be anonymous. Also, I see I might just make you keep hurting yourself." He pointed at the death pebble behind my heel.
"Oh. Okay, well, thanks for the note? And uhm. You have a great night kind sir... and uhm. I gotta go. Thank you!" -and just like that, I jumped into the car and twisted the key twice as my car sputtered to life and drew him a fake smile as he watched me leave. Fuck. That was embarrassing. Lord is that man sexy and all the things I don't wanna juggle right now. "Snap out of it Rose. Ya booty patootie is donezo! Let's get a bottle of wine and call it." , I say to myself as I toss my cap in the backseat. Pulling up to my bestfriend Deena's house, I texted her two hours ago to have her brother pick up some wine and bud for us to celebrate. I pulled my phone out to check and she replied," Waiting on you!" So I climb out the car and toss my heels in the backseat. Knocking three times on the garage door, it opens and I slide in. Immediately handed a glass of pineapple wine and hugged as a congratulations. Both Deena and her brother were older than me.
"How'd it go? Sorry I couldn't make it. Work was a bitch",Deena said as she plopped me down on a couch and scooted super close to me.
"Ehh. I fell on the stage. I fell at my car. And I fell in front of this really cute guy who- honestly was a panty dropper. He caught me and kept me for a good couple minutes but I left. Oh! By the way, never wearing heels in front of big crowds AGAIN!"
Her eyes went wide and she held my arm with desperation to know more,"Wait, pause and rewind. You met a guy????"
"Yeah. But I don't know him nor know anything about him. I just know he left a note on my car because my falling caught his attention. As usual, I'm an embarrassment in everything, ha." I toked on the blunt being passed around, and washed down the coughing with some wine. "Wait. You missed the part where I fell. You missed the part where I fell ... again. But you caught that I met a guy?"
Laughing, Deena threw her hair back and fell quiet before speaking again. "You never let anyone in. You meeting anyone now and days is a miracle. I kinda can't believe you gave him the time of day at all really." She fiddled with her thumbs as she spoke. No matter how old she is, I've always considered her younger than me.
"I need some air. Wanna go outside?"
"Sure"deena replied and she pulled me up and we went to sit on the hood of my car.
"You have pants I can wear? This dress is skin tight and really getting at me now." I tugged are the dress repeatedly to keep it from exposing my entire body to the world as I lay on the hood.
"Sure. You wanna change?- Hey! Is this the note he left you??" She plucked the gold rimmed card from the windshield and smiled at me.
"Oh shit! Yeah, it is! I rushed off because I felt weird about being with him. What's it say anyhow?" A flash of his face went through my mind and I shook him away. I CANNOT LET MY LIFE BE ABOUT MEN AGAIN!
Deena replied in a deep husky mock voice,"Hello Rose, I couldn't help but notice how beautiful you were during the ceremony. I would love to get to know you. Hoping to officially meet you soon.
1582303300"-back in her regular voice," Ou' creepy! Well, are you gonna call him? You said he already stuck around to meet you?" She wiggles her eyebrows playfully as to encourage me to save his number."Yeah, but I don't care? See if I entertain this, who's gonna binge watch with you or pick up your shifts?"
"Hey, isn't Davos the name of that construction company that boomed with like... models? I mean, not models but you know? Sexy workers? If you won't call him, can I?" She jokes and throws the card inside the car.
I laughed at her, wondering why she would know such information. "I told you. Don't know, don't care. What are we doing tomorrow? I'm off." I slid off the hood of my car and pulled a pack of cigarettes from the side door, but slid it right back in after holding it for two seconds.
Deena eyed me and raised her eyebrows in confusion, "You still trying to quit? I thought you wanted to smoke tonight?"
I sighed, rubbed my face and pulled my long, wavy, brunette hair into a tight wound bun, "Yeah. I'm still working on dropping the weed. The cigarettes have been here for a while already. I haven't touched them much since Robby left me. The drinking, well, one drink won't hurt anyone, right?"
"Hey, as long as you stick to it. Weed never killed anyone. Drinking definitely has though. Although it's been one drink, you should stay the night! It'll be fun! My mom has this bridal shower for one of her friends. You should come with me. Please?" She clasped her hands together in excitement as she looked at me with pleading eyes.
"Alrighty. Guess we have tomorrow's plans." I grabbed my bag from the trunk, locked up my car, although old and beaten up, it still got me to and from, and we went inside the house.
Slipping on a pair of pajamas from Deena, I washed my face and wondered, "Should I be doing something else in life? Where am I headed anyways? James.... why is he in my thoughts anyways?! ... His eyes. So gorgeous and deep. Ughhhh. Men." -snapping out of it, I curled up next to Deena who I faintly heard saying something about doing our nails, and I was out like a light.
