At first my dream was just a dark starry night. Not just the sky but all around me. It was calm and comforting. I always loved the darkness, it was a great place to hide. I knew what would come after this though. It always happened this way.
Eventually I would be found and light would form a crack. As it got bigger the smell of smoke from a cigarette would float in and a male's face would appear. It would never be a clear face. More of the face of several different ones. It's voice that of my step mother's. The face would tell me in that cruel way, to get out of my hiding space. I had work to do. Then as I crawled out to do my chores, fires would lick at me all over. Sending pain everywhere it touched.
I wasn't scared of the fire either. I liked the fire as it burnt away everything in it's path. I would spend this nightmare hoping the next lick would do the same to me. Before the other face came. But it never did. The other face always came. And this one I knew.
It was a single man's face. Anyone looking at him would think he was handsome but only I could see the cruelty behind his eyes. He would call me into my bedroom because the day would be over and it was time for me to go to sleep. Even if I refused he would just wave his hand and I would be in my room with the door disappearing behind me. I could never live through it again, so when that time came, I would scream inside my head until someone woke me up.
I sat in the starry night waiting for the nightmare to start. But it hadn't yet. I looked around wondering why and then I saw it. But it was a warm glow. I hesitated then walked forward toward it. I could hear soft music coming from it.
As I got closer the warmth got stronger but never too much. The music got louder and I strained to understand it's words but they sounded like a lullaby. It was sweet and caressing. I walked through the glow and instead of seeing the face, I saw my kidnapper.
'What is he doing here?' I thought to myself.
"I'm here to protect you."
I scoffed at that suggestion.
"Hate to break it to you. But I happen to be luck challenged. No one can protect me, and I highly doubt an adult like you would try without a price."
"Oh there is a price, but I'm sure I can make it worth it." He said with a smirk on his face.
"And what's the price?" Who knows, maybe I can make an adult work for me.
He walked closer to me and stopped almost an inch away from being pressed up against me. It made me nervous but since this hadn't turned into a nightmare yet, I stood my ground.
"Every time I save you, no matter how big or small. You have to give me a kiss."
I almost died laughing right then and there, but when I calmed my giggles I noticed he was being serious. I thought about it for a minute. I must really be having some hormone issues, it my dreams keep having him in them. But honestly it was just a dream, what could it hurt if it really got rid of the nightmares.
"Deal." I said and held out my hand for him to shake.
Instead of grabbing my hand, he snaked his arm around my waist and pulled me flat against him.
"Um, what ya doing?"
"A deals a deal. I see no demons or nightmares around. So I just saved you, I want my payment."
He was right, so I stood on my tippy toes and gave him a quick peck on his lips.
"That's not a kiss. Let me show you how it's done."
