- Cut your hair regularly. Cutting or trimming your hair every 5-8 weeks is very beneficial. It gets rid of those pesky split ends that damage your hair. (swimmers know what's up.) After a cut, for me anyways, my hair grows slightly faster for a few weeks. It also gives your hair that fresh look, especially if you prefer your hair to be a consistent length.
- Stop conditioning your scalp. Too much conditioner on your scalp can make it look oily, greasy, unnaturally shiny. Rather than applying your conditioner to the top of your head first, focus on your ends and work your way up. I usually put my condition in the middle of my hair and spread it down, using the excess for my scalp. I know when I've properly conditioned because my hair is sleek and smooth.
- Hot water kills. I'm sure I'm not the only person who loves them a scalding shower after a long day. The whole bathroom becomes a sauna and it's just so relaxing... But not for your hair! Water that is too hot can damage your hair, causing it to become dry and brittle. It's like using a flat iron with the heat cranked all the way up without applying heat protectant. Mildly hot water, though, has some benefits. It rids the hair and scalp of dirt and bacteria.
- Cold water revives. Cold water, although it's cold and, honestly, who likes standing in artic rain naked, does wonders for your hair. It helps keep the roots strong and healthy. For me, it gives my hair a beautiful, healthy sheen that lasts for days. It also helps my hair grow faster. (Cold water is also great for your skin but more on that later.)
- Brush your hair but not too much. You know the common saying that if you brush your hair with 100 strokes, you'll get beautiful hair blah blah blah. Well, if you haven't guessed it yet, that's actually had for your hair. Your scalp creates natural oils, hence the reason your hair gets greasy when you don't wash it in a long time. When you brush your hair, it spreads the oil downward, which is what gives it that healthy shine. That's okay. But using 100 strokes? That's what we call #extra. It's bad for your hair because it just makes the rest of your hair oily, leaving your scalp dry, and imagine if you combed through tall grass 100 times. You're going to end up with a lot of now-dead grass in your hand.
