I woke up in a bit of a shock to the sound of knocking. After remembering something so unpleasant. I was greeted by the gentle Aroma of sugar, cinnamon and butter. I am accustomed to waking up to Madison's cooking, yet this time I was greeted by a different voice at my door.
" Good morning, Madison told me to wake you. We made breakfast."
She sounded somewhat hesitant like she was scared of something.
" Madison said you don't really like breakfast, but she still made you some if you want."
"I don't dislike breakfast. I just don't usually have enough time to have it."
"I see." She left for what I can only assume was a dining hall.
Madison's cooking was always exceptional, but it was Violet's reaction to the meal that was more enjoyable to me. I have never had to gauge someone's reactions before I could directly look at her eyes and still not tell who she felt. Seeing her face change as she took a bite was amusing in its own way. I was struck with a sudden revelation you might even call it an epiphany.
" oh Madison you sly vixen, you've been winning her over with your culinary talents from the start haven't you."
I asked as she began to clean up the table.
" Why whatever do you mean William?"
Her eyes shimmered mischievously to taunt me, She has always had a way of keeping her tone neutral. Madison is well aware of my talent and uses it to relentlessly tease me, but her intentions were commendable. First she used the lavish dinner to win violet over, and now this breakfast was another chance to earn her affections. Madison has held the place as my most valued companion for my entire life; as such, she has never failed to help me with anything, including a newly adopted young lady.
I looked over to violet as she stuffed her face and thought about what I would use too bound with her. What If I buy her something, something she would use and appreciate even more than food.
"that's it".
"Anything, I should prepare" madison was waiting patiently for instruction
proving her vale.
"Yes I have a list of appointments I would like you to schedule. "
The first on my list of ways to win her over was to get her hair cut. I brought my personal Barber to the home. As I explained to him who the haircut was for, but then his soul looked confused and somewhat nervous, I realized, I may have done something odd.
Straight chin-length hair and newly straightened bangs, the latter which I was pleased by since I could now see her eyes better. but it's clear I should have arranged for a stylist to come instead. In spite of her boy's haircut, she was smiling but she must hate it, she was just being polite. What young lady wants to have a grown man's hair.
An old acquaintance of mine owns a great deal of designer dresses and was rather willing to brang a great deal of her collection to my home. This plan serenity would pass and the, and gave me violets favor. As she set the living room, violet stood among a sea of fabric as someone who had never left the comforting port of utility. The result of these grande vogue was a small light brown dress, with golden ribbons tied to the sleeves. The dress demands a level of respect due to its simplicity of its aesthetic, the skirt frilled with a softness that invited charm. And the brown slick was immaculate, and seemed to sell violet.
This was a point for me.
'But the day was not over yet, I was going to make it clear I was superior to Madison. After she left, I promised to take her to a theme park, the same one my...maid had taken me to as a boy. I still remember it-the candy, the popcorn, the smells, the raids and all the things and more. I recounted all these things to violet that brisk spring day. Unfortunately, the weather cares little about the plans of humans.
We never left home, I had never had to apologize to a child before, so I started with ice cream.
"How is it , "
"It's good."
"Well did you have fun today."
"Yes"
She seemed so happy, but I would have to squander it.
"Well I am afraid that the day will be cut short, the theme park is closed."
"Oh no, It's all ruined. "
I looked at her and saw she was crying, I knew she would be upset but not like this.
"I will fix it,..it will be ok."
"NO, IT'S NOT OK."
I was defeated by this and found myself unable to respond at first but all I muster was an apology.
"I see, I'm sorry about the park."
"What...no, not the park...my...my dress."
I noticed that she had spilled ice cream on her new dress. She only cared about the stain. I began to laugh Hysterically I couldn't win control over myself. It was so trivial and straightforward, but I am happy she was not mad at me.
"Why are you laughing? " she asked me innocently which only made me laugh harder
" you don't even care." I managed to speak despite my snickering.
She looked confused like she had no idea what to say but then uttered something unforgettable
"No" she said, wiping the tears from her face " today was the second best day ever."
"Please don't apologize for anything, " she added.
I had been blind to so many things before I met her, the joy of not "Knowing" eluded me my inter life. Yet with violet, I find myself embarrassed of how little I could discern of her feelings. She was unlike any other challenge I had the pleasure of facing. The truth is I was overwhelmed; to the point even the slightest hint of misfortune set me off. I had been treating it as a challenge, like everything else.
"Well then," I sighed relieved, " I am certainly glad you had fun today."
"Yes, I did. " Violet wiped the last of her tears.
"Wait, second best ?". the thought just hit me.
She smiled at me as she stood up.
"Of course, yesterday is still the first."
