"Ah, there he was—his perfect golden hair bobbing to and fro as he told Nino an apparently intense story; his eyes reflecting the joyful smile spread across his face, revealing his straight white teeth. Marinette blushed, unaware of her goofy grin. As Adrien settled into his seat, he glanced backward to Marinette, and gave her a friendly wave. That familiar pang suddenly smashed into her heart, a mixture of happiness that she had been acknowledged, longing for the presence of his touch, and sadness from the thought she had planted into her mind that she would never be worthy of him. Marinette stared patiently at the back of his head, waiting for something, anything to happen, when suddenly, Adrien spun in his chair. He took Marinette's hands and gazed with stony eyes into her soul. 'Marinette,' he said, 'I love you.' He pulled her face closer to his, and—"
"Alya," Marinette hissed from behind her game controller. A single bold message flashed onto the screen: "PLAYER TWO WINS."
Alya smirked with pride. "My distraction worked! As always," she added.
"That's not fair," Marinette huffed.
"It is too."
"Is not."
"Is too."
Marinette collapsed onto the couch, grasping the controller. "Rematch?" she asked, looking to Alya expectantly.
"No! That was our fifth round. Unless you'd like to hear more about you and Adrien's love life."
Marinette guffawed. "No, I...don't. I don't. But, you know what we should do?" Alya looked on in anticipation, and Marinette continued, fishing for a topic change. "I still haven't shown you those pictures of my baby cousin I mentioned the other day, Pierre! He's so adorable, you just have to see him."
"I'm sure he is! Show me." Yes, Alya thought. I've been waiting to get my hands on Marinette's phone.
Marinette fished around for her phone in her pocket and pulled up the photo. Alya immediately snatched the phone. Girl, she thought, amused, you have too much trust. She switched to the Messenger app and found Adrien's contact, accompanied by a his smiling face as the icon. She began to slowly type out a message. "Pierre is so adorable, I love his little smile," she said as she typed.
"I know!" Marinette squealed. "There's another one if you swipe to the left."
Alya pretended to swipe, over-dramaticizing the movement to make sure Marinette was convinced. She finished her message and hovered her finger over send, cooing softly at an image she wasn't looking at.
The text read: "Adrien, I know it's been a while since we talked, because of summer and all. We should meet up sometime." Satisfied, Alya tapped send and handed Marinette her phone.
After a moment of silence, Marinette parted her lips to speak. "Alya, why were you texting Adrien?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"I mean that you just texted the love of my life and asked him out on a date! What if he says no?" Marinette's cheeks grew red and she clutched the side of her face, her breaths becoming shorter.
Alya held up her hands in defense. "But what if he says yes?"
"Then, Alya, it's even worse," Marinette tried to explain, starting to feel overwhelmed. "Then we have to face each oth—"
The cell phone rang loudly, cutting Marinette's sentence short. She and Alya exchanged excited glances. "It's a video call from Adrien," she said.
"Well," Alya whispered, "pick it up!"
