As it rained outside, I watched raindrops chase each other across the glass. The pitter-patter of the rain was like a soft music from the earth, maybe it was the way it showed it's gratitude for quenching its thirst as the bleak grey cloud sprinkled droplets of water everywhere.
The street looked like an unfinished painting, the white snow still blanketed the sidewalks but the silver puddles were washing them away. I have always loved rain, it fascinated me as a child.
But it reminded me of that day when everything sank in me as my parents were lowered into the grave. It was goodbye, they weren't coming back. The apologies or words of assurance didn't comfort me but I sank, deeper and deeper into the blackness. There was an ocean of unshed tears in my eyes, a burning flame in my voice and my heart was drowning. It was not okay, it will never be okay...
"Nora?"
His voice was soothing, it calmed my nerves and strangely, it gave me a sense of relief. It was Jake, clad in boots, jeans, and a navy blue hoodie.
"Are you okay?" His voice laced with concern.
No.
"Yeah, I am fine." I gave him a tight-lipped smile and he stared.
He sighed, taking a step closer to me and wrapping his arms around me.
"I know you are hurting," He whispered, "But hold on, just a little longer."
And I did. I held onto him, in his embrace and for once, I felt a ray of hope in me.
It has been a week since I started working in Coffee and Cakes. I worked at morning as a cashier, it was nice. I no longer felt caged, the other employers were also nice even though I didn't take much effort to know them.
Jake was close to a friend now, he said lame jokes in between to lighten the atmosphere and was a good guide. He tried to make me comfortable and did everything to ease my work. He was always smiling, appreciating others and making everyone happy.
He was different.
"Thanks." I pulled away, the air was charged and awkward at the same time.
He raked a hand through his hair, "Um, can you do a favor?"
