Chapter 7 – Stay Like This Forever
Kimberley’s POV
The next two months flew by faster than I thought was humanly possible. Then again, nothing really seems impossible anymore. Alex, as expected, did not take the news well. We sat in my bedroom for hours just holding each other, the painful silence only broken by our sobs. My brothers and sisters, most of them aren’t old enough to really know what’s going on. I sat in the hallway, silent tears streaming down my cheeks as my mother told them that in a few months I would leave and that I probably wouldn’t come back. I could hear them asking questions but after a shaky breathe sounded from the room I knew my mother was in no state to answer them. And Niall, he didn’t lie. He’s stayed by my side nearly twenty four-seven and he has no idea how grateful I am for that. He never asked questions, even when he found me on my bed crying my eyes out, he just wrapped me in his arms and understood. He never said it would be OK in the end because we both knew painfully well that this story wouldn’t have a happy ending. He just promised me he wouldn’t leave me, promised me he wouldn’t forget me. That’s all I wanted to hear.
The bland, white hospital room stares me down. I hate hospitals; they always have such a depressing mood. You can’t help but think of who might have stayed in here before you, who might have lived in here, who might have died in this very room. I tiptoe over towards the freshly made bed and set the picture frame down on my bed side table. It’s a picture of me and Niall, taken before he first left for his tour, before my life turned upside down. I subconsciously trace the outline of our happy smiles and wonder if I’ll ever smile like that again. I carefully take a seat on the hard rubber mattress, contemplating my future, how this bland room could be the last thing I ever see, how this bland room could be my home for the rest of my life. A comforting arm snuck around my shoulders and I was pulled in to my boyfriend’s warm chest. “I’m not leaving you, you know that right,” Niall whispered gently in my ear. I can’t summon the energy to move or say anything so I just let him pull me further in to his chest. I don’t know how long we stay like this, it feels like hours but it’s more likely to just be mere minutes. Either way our time together is growing shorter and shorter with each passing second, with each passing breathe. I wish I could just freeze this moment in time and stay like this, with Niall forever.
t explain why but the words six months repeat over and over in my head like one of those crazy dreams that drive people insane. Then it hits me, I have six months to live.
