A very very long time ago...
Queen Irina of Currenor gazed into the inky depths of the Astur Chasm regarding it for what she hoped would be the last time. She planned to close the chasm shut to seal away a dreadful enemy who had been terrorizing the oceans. Beside her stood her King Byor who bore a troubled expression.
"Irina are you sure you have enough power to seal the Chasm?" Asked her husband King Byor in apprehension.
"Yes Byor I have the Trident which gives me more than enough power to do this. And anyway I must do this so it can never return to harm us," she replied calmly as she positioned herself.
"Yes but the vault should hold it dear and you know if you over extend yourself the consequences can be severe."
"In case the vault fails this is the only way to insure Currenor's safety from destruction. Now I'm done talking about this Byor. I must begin the process of sealing and I need my utmost concentration," As Irina spoke the gold trident in her hand began to emit a soft green and blue light.
Byor slowly swam backwards away from Irina as the water began to stir. Raising the trident into the water Irina focused on trillions of gallons of water moving forward inch by inch pushing the edges of the chasm together.
The light around the trident grew brighter and Irina swung the trident upwards sending the remaining water in the chasm upwards. As the chasm came to a stop a centimeter away from connecting a beam of energy shot forward and traveled along the crack.
From deep in the chasm a earth shaking roar of rage sounded causing Byor to flinch. Determined to close it once and for all Irina took a deep breath and snapped the chasm shut. A pulse of pain shot into her head causing her to release the trident.
With a clatter it hit the sea floor and Byor rushed to Irina's side. The queen clutched him for support as she tried to keep from collapsing completely.
"Irina dear are you ok?" Asked Byor as he slid an arm around her waist for support. He looked at her with apprehension in his eyes.
"Yes Byor it just took a lot more effort to close it than I had originally anticipated. But it was worth it we finally defeated it and now we can rest easy on that front." Irina replied in a bone weary voice.
The royal pair slowly began to make their way back to their city. Byor glanced backwards at the former chasm and prayed that the evil that dwelled within would never again swim rampant across the seven seas.
Unbeknownst to either of the merfolk an eel stealthily swam up from a patch of tangled seaweed and swam off into the open ocean.
