DO NOT WATCH THE VIDEO WHILE READING THIS, ITS NOT PART OF IT, I EXPLAINED AT THE END
Another shuddering breath made me put my hand to my mouth so as not to cry out. I shut my eyes once again and shivered. It was cold. Now that I thought about it, I'd forgotten all of my winter clothes, and was sitting with a light jacket, thin leggings, and a pair of sneakers. Not the most ideal for mid December weather.
Laying my head back, I rested my hands in my lap. I could feel them shaking. Was it going to happen again?
A warm pair of hands grabbed mine and I opened my eyes with a poor attempt at a smile.
"Oh my God, you're freezing! No wonder you're shaking! How long did you say you were waiting for the ambulance? You might get hypothermia or frostbite with your thin clothes! It's negative three degrees outside!" The woman next to me grabbed for a blanket, but I didn't care. The only thing that mattered was Will.
(Yes, this is true, I looked stuff up. You can get hypothermia or frostbite in under 30 minutes if the temp. is 0 or below, and the wind chill can create even colder temperatures. Please stay safe. Also they live in Massachusetts so -3 degrees Fahrenheit is very possible. Sorry, continue reading)
Almost as if he'd read my mind, my husband started to stir.
"Ugh," he mumbled. "What happened?"
I gasped, and gripped his hand.
"Ava? Why are you so cold, where ar-" I cut him off by hugging him tightly.
"Ava! Oh, you're freezing! Oh, God! No, we are not doing this again," Will was immediately alert. "Get her warm! She needs heat! She'll faint from the cold, it's happened once before!"
Will started rubbing my hands as blankets were draped across my shivering shoulders.
"I'm f-fine W-W-Will. It's not the same as last time, I'm just cold..." I stuttered weakly, then doubled over as my vision darkened at the edges.
"Ok-kay... m-m-maybe not."
We just then arrived at the hospital. The doors were flung open by two more personnel. Will's gurney was wheeled out and down, but he tried to get off and up to me, still in the ambulance. I tried standing, but stumbled a little.
The female paramedic steadied me as I walked out of the ambulance. They helped me down as Will was pulled back and into the hospital.
I'd only taken a step further when my vision tunneled. Yep, definitely happening again. Oh please don't black out, I thought. The woman just barely caught my shoulders as Will burst back outside, three hospital staff members chasing him.
"Ava! Ava! Stay with me! You can't go to sleep. Stay awake!"
I managed to give a small nod, a voice in the back of my head panicking, scared because of what happened last time. I struggled to keep my eyes open. Will easily picked me up, despite having been knocked out himself, and raced to the indoors, the light.
The first time this had happened with Will, he'd managed to keep me awake long enough to warm me up by shining his phone flashlight in my eyes. This happened when I had been much younger. Playing out in the snow with my siblings and friends, I'd passed out and woke in the hospital. The doctors had told my parents that the cold had made me faint and almost killed me. From that point on, I was never allowed outside in the cold for more than a few minutes.
I'd told Will about it, being reluctant to go out during the winter months, and he's convinced me to try it, just for a bit. We'd lost track of time, and even with the thick coats and winter gear on, it had been to long.
"How long were we out there?" he asked.
"I d-don't know. B-but I just f-found you lying there. An-nd there was a lot of blood, a-and I couldn't wake you up..." I stuttered. At this point, I broke down in tears. It was just to much to bear as I thought Will might die and then I could've died too.
"Hey, Ava. Shhh, come here. Don't cry... It was only a little head wound. I used to play football, remember? I've gotten worse concussions."
He cradled me tighter, rubbing my arms to get circulation going.
By thing time, the hospital staff had come and shooed away the small crowd that had gathered after we'd ran into the building.
A woman walked up to us and said, "Sir, we have a room empty that I'm sure you would prefer to the open corridor."
Will nodded, still carrying me close to his chest. The nurse led us to the room and Will set me down in the bed and started rubbing my legs as a doctor walked. He asked what happened. Will explained, switching to my other leg.
"Could I see your head please?" the doctor asked. Will hesitated, then pulled up a chair and held my hand while the doctor saw to his wound.
"Slipped on ice you said? It seems there must have been a knot in the ice that you landed on. Otherwise, I don't see how you could've cut your head like this," he sighed. "Well, I'll send a nurse in with more blankets and an electric pad for the lady, and I'll be back shortly with something to clean that with."
And he left, leaving Will and me to ourselves.
I shivered, my current light jacket unzipped. With fumbling, numb fingers, I tried to zip it up.
Will came to the rescue and did it for me. But I was still cold.
"Get in the bed. You're warmer than me," my lips barely moved.
So, he shifted me over and climbed in by my side, cradling me to his chest. I turned more towards him and the extremely comfortable heat of his embrace.
----------WOOOOOO TIMESKIP FOR ONCE----------
I woke up the next morning, still beside Will.. There seemed to be a mountain of blankets over us and a hot water bottle at our feet. Well, my feet because I was five foot three and Will was six foot one, literally towering over me. So, closer to his knees.
I looked up at his peaceful face, still half asleep. He was so serene when he was relaxed. Nothing to worry about.
Will, who had already been awake, kissed my forehead when he saw that I was up.
"We have to go home, you know. I called Maggie last night and asked her to feed Marley, but I don't think we need to stay too long."
"Five more minutes," I mumbled and burrowed deeper under the blankets. He laughed and sat up. Will pulled on his socks, shoes, hat, and gloves, then started to do the same for my shoes. Then, he put his oversized coat on my shoulders and his scarf around my neck. I placed my hands in the pockets and hopped off the bed, Will's coat reaching almost to my knees.
As soon as we were ready, we walked to the front desk to check out.
The receptionist smiled at us, then reached for the forms on his desk for us to fill out. Will was half way through writing down the insurance information, when he stopped, pen hovering over the paper. He turned to me.
"How are we going to get home?"
THE END! I hoped you liked it! It's just a cute little short story I wrote, and I wanted to see how many people would find and read it.
SO! The story behind the video up top is a bit interesting. While writing this, I was listening to the original soundtrack from my favorite anime Hunter X Hunter, the 2011 version. The song is called Death Agony, and I COULD'NT REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS IN THE ANIME, AND MY ONLY THOUGHT WHEN I CHECKED THE TITLE WAS "WHO DIED". It made me really nervous, and listening to that while writing this was a bit concerning.
Anyway, have a great rest of your day/night/whatever time it is. :)
