Okay so I watched Black Panther tonight for the first time, and it was AMAZING. I can definitely see why this was a cultural phenomenon, although it wasn't as impactful in New Zealand as it was in America. You can see why it was the 9th highest grossing film.
Where do I start? I guess the visuals. Of course, since it was a Marvel movie, the visuals were top-notch. It made Wakanda feel real. To its amazing start, with the sand, to the awesome fights, especially the one in Korea.
Honestly, one of the best things in the movie were the costumes. They were absolutely stunning and gave the vibe of a colourful African culture. They were so detailed, and just ugh. Amazing.
Actors? Great. Letitia Wright made me absolutely love Shuri, and Chadwick Boseman was so good as T'Challa. Andy Serkis was great as the psycho Klaw (Claw? Klawe? I dunno) but Michael B Jordan was just fantastic as Killmonger. He brought that emotion needed for the character. I was so impressed. Everyone was so good!
There were some iconic lines. 'What're thooooooose?' made me laugh, as well as 'Delete that footage.' Also, 'I must right these wrongs.' good. good. good.
Plot was great. Villain was great. Killmonger did such a good job to shake what T'Challa thought Wakanda was about, and with Erik's actions, made T'Challa think about the legacy of Wakanda. (bet they're regretting it now after infinity war huh) T'Challa was amazing too, he wasn't the stereotypical hero, doing what he thought was right. He was guilty about killing the villain, so he felt real.
But the women of Wakanda. Ooh boy, I loved them. Shuri? Honestly the best person ever, would protect with my life. Nakia? Freaking badass as hell. Her awesome circle blade things? Cool as heck. Okoye? She was so loyal to the throne she would kill her love for it. Also I would not want to be around her when she's angry. But I love her!
All in all, Black Panther was an amazing movie. One thing I think would have been cool is that at the start of the film, the characters would mostly speak Wakandan, then slowly turn to English at the end, signifying that as the audience, we learnt about Wakanda. But that's my only critical thought about it! It was so good.
