It was all thanks to my sister that I was, once again, late for school. Grace Oak, the annoying brat that she is, decided that she did not want Cheerios for breakfast. So the six year old picked up the bowl, and threw it at me. I had to change, which meant I missed the bus, and had to walk.
The bell went when I was five hundred meters down the road. I sprinted. I could just make it in time if I hurried. But I have asthma. And I'm very unfit.
Walking into school, I pull my jacket up around my face, hurrying past Ms. Hardy, the 'Late Officer'.
"Carrie Oak, is that you?" Ms. Hardy practically yelled.
"Yes, Ms. Hardy", I timidly speak. If I'm lucky she won't mark me late.
"Well then, Miss Oak, we'll just have to mark you late".
She pulls out her book, and opens up the page to today's date. A scribble on the page and I am sent off to class.

Mr Dais raises his eyebrow at me as I enter the class. I slide into my seat in the second row next to my friend Chais Quinn. She's one of the most heavily pierced people I know. Her black hair suits her oval face and her piercing grey eyes.
"Page a hundred and eighty three, questions one to thirteen," she whispered to me.
Maths is not my strong subject. I groan as I look at the page of algebra.
"Miss Oak, be quiet please", Mr Dais's voice rings out across the room.
I pick up my pen, and pray that I get the questions right.

It's lunch, the cafeteria is loud and my head is bursting. I sit in the very back table of the cafeteria, and try as hard as I can to block out the noise. Chais sits down next to me, her burger and chips being quickly devoured. It's like she's breathing them in. Devon, one of my other good friends comes over and starts eating, talking Chais about her new piercing (a tragus on her left ear).
"So, Carrie, want any piercings?" Devon asks me.
I am completely unpierced.
"I dunno Devon, they look kinda painful."
"They don't hurt too much Carrie", Chais tries to persuade me.
"Then which one would I get?"
"Just a basic one, like, a lobe piercing." Chais suggests. "Besides, you look weird walking next to Devon and I. I mean, we are both heavily pierced, and you have, like none."
"And they don't hurt too bad." Devon convinces me.
"But that's because your Mundanity is that you feel pain less than it actually is." I try to argue.
That makes me receive a glare from Devon.
"That's not all it is", Devon argued.

We bickered on for the rest of the day, until the last bell rang. I walked home via Grace's school.
"How was your day Grace?"
"It was good"
"Tell me the truth"
"One of the older boys flushed my head down the toilet"
"Did you tell anyone?"
"He th-threatened to kill me."
"That's not okay. Who was it?"
"Charles Dopper"
"I'm gonna beat that little fucker up," I mutter.
I dump Grace at home, and head towards the mall, where I know Dopper will be. I march right up to him and say,
"What the fuck did you do to my sister punk?"
"You know, you're not very intimidating. You're too short to be intimidating." With that, he and his friends saunter off, laughing.

I get home at maybe eight, having done my homework in the library and just mooching around the mall, looking at books and such.
"Hey Carrie, I've got some spaghetti bolognaise left over if you want it," My mum calls out.
I walk into the kitchen, starving. I hadn't noticed that I was hungry before she declared she had food.
She hands me a bowl of food, and we talk for a little while, then I excuse myself.
I lie in bed, thinking. Everyone has at least one Mundane Power. Most find it really easily. But I'm nearly seventeen, and I don't know it. I have broken bones, smashed phone screens, and I can't touch type. Each of those is a common power. I checked the online lists, and none of those fit. Also, I'm not willing to try any of the weird ones, like snorting milk up my nose and swallowing it, or being able to swallow a whole carrot.
I plug my phone into my charger, and turn off the light. I roll onto my side on my bed, and attempt to fall off to sleep.
Anxious thoughts plague my head.
'You're not good enough, you'll fail your exams.'
'Useless. You can't beat up Charles Dopper.'
I try to block them out, but they keep seeping through. Fucking anxiety.
Finally, I drift off to another nightmarish sleep.
