I sat in a chair opposite Carlisle, who mopped up my blood as he removed glass shards from my arm. He dropped one into a bowl. I tried not to look at the blood. "I sure can kill a party," I sighed.

"It's not your fault," he replied. "Jasper hasn't been away from human blood as long as the rest of us."

"Seems like you're the only one it doesn't effect," I told him what I noticed.

"Centuries of practice," he explained.

"Did you ever think of... living differently?" I asked.

"I enjoy my work too much," he replied. "Helping people, saving lives. I'm hoping there's a point to my existence, even if I am damned."

"Damned?" I looked at him, confused. "You're not damned."

"Then you and I agree," he said. "But Edward doesn't believe there's an afterlife for our kind. He thinks we've lost our souls."

I realized. "That's why he won't... He thinks he'd be damning me."

"If you believed as he did, would you risk it?" he asked.

No. Not ever.

A/N: Sorry that this chapter is so short, just like that one chapter. This was all of this one scene. Anyway, enjoy my next chapter.
