Ch. 1 _ Never Take The Metro At Night

A word of advice? Seattle sucks. Unfortunately for me, my undead-body was immensely susceptible to heat. Making the rainy state boarding the oversized iceberg that is British Columbia, my home.

The city is dull and dreary during the day. The nightlife is similar, if you ignore the blinding fluorescence emanating from nearly every building.

The latter is the current setting that greets me, as I make my way south on 5th Avenue, towards the nearest subway line.

The streets aren't crowded at 4:42am; as most bars and clubs have closed for the evening---or morning I should say. I walk silently along the rain patterned concrete. I don't even receive a look from the group of bystanders huddled across the street. No doubt, up to something the law might not take too kindly too.

Dark colors have taken their residence as my standard appearance to me. My look usually consist of a grey hoodie, black jeans, and water-resistant boots. Simple and indistinguishable.

Approaching a long faded red archway, I descended down to the rail line. I take the steps calmly, my body sated from the feeding less than an hour ago. In a simple motion I maneuver myself to leap over the metal turnstile. In a matter of seconds, I stand motionlessly looking upon the dark tunneling system of the metro.

Soon enough, the metal train screeches to a halt. The doors slide open to an unexpectedly occupied car. I make my way in, opting to stand and hold onto the railing above instead of taking a seat. It only took a swift glance to the left to process all nearby occupants. I had entered the second to last train-car with another women. She looked to be in her early twenties, with a narrow face and defined cheekbones. Her lightly colored brunette hair was pulled up into a bun. Emerald colored eyes, which held speckles of blue within them, remained fixed on the sliding metal doors. She was wearing what looked to be an expensive beige raincoat, while clutching a dark leather tote.

In the same timespan, I took in the three men located within the train-car just in front of us. The first two stood up in a position mirroring mine, the third was seated with a gruff expression on his weathered face. The two standing each wore a crooked grin, as they made conversation with each other. One of which had a shaved head, and the other bearded thin greasy hair. I noticed all three of them look into the train-car behind, to no doubt register my arrival. The man with the shaven head dropped his grin, as an angered expression took hold. He slapped the shoulder of the bearded man sitting down and started speaking to him with exaggerated gestures.

Looking forward as the train moved throughout the tunnel system, I strained my hearing to listen on on what they were saying.

"Great, another bitch just got on."

"Cool it. I doubt they'll get off at the same stop."

"Even if they do, now we won't have to share just the one."

I tuned out the voices as they began to chuckle, already getting what these three had in mind before I boarded. I frowned, and my eyes narrowed in frustration; knowing that my night(morning) just got a lot longer.

As the train halted to a stop once more, I watch from the corner of my vision as the brunette cast a nervous glance over at the adjoined train-car. Her knuckles turned white as she gripped the handles of her tote. Uneasiness rolled over in wave after wave. At least she was aware of her surrounding, unlike most humans.

The doors to our train-car opened, and she remained seated. Although with my enhances perception, I say her straighten up and eye the exist. The men in the other cart tried to remain inconspicuous as they watched her. They seemed to relax more when they saw that the target of their attention was still seated. At seemingly the last second, the brunette woman stood up and quickly approach the doors. She made her exit, and began making her way down the concrete path and towards the stairway leading up and out of the underground.

The three men in the other cart scrambled, one of them letting out a string of curses. Under other circumstances, the idea of three burly men trying to rush out of a train-car at the same time could be perceived as comical. Unfortunately, they all made it and regained their composer. The three began to stride calmly in the direction the brunette.

It was at this time the doors started to close again. I let out a sigh, this wasn't anywhere close to my stop. I briefly recounted those many videos shown, of a predator hunting its prey. According to the camera crew, it was against their ethics to interfere with the circle of life. Nature was cruel, and interfering with the ecosystem was wrong.

I snapped out of this thought process quicker than a human perspective of time. The longer I 'lived' as a vampire, the more any sense of empathy seemed to disappear. In the blink of an eye, I was walking onto the concrete walkway, the metal sliding doors closing behind me.

[A/N]: What do you think? I'm sorry, I have to get the more serious/dramatic chapters out of the way first! Next chapter will be longer and pick up right where this left off; will also carry the same tone. From there on out, this is going to be a much more light-hearted story. Alycia and You will have much more dialog in the third chapter!!!

Vampire Abilities: Heightened senses; Heightened speed; Heightened strength. You wouldn't catch fire in the sun, however the sun weakens you; if out for a long period, you will develop 2nd and 3rd degree burns before dying. (Sorry no compulsion! Way too OP. Vampires in this story do have the ability to make humans feel calm around them, although the effect isn't overpowering.)
