As Alice approached the door to Pops, she saw his truck out of the corner of her eye. She took a deep breath as she pulled the door open.
She stopped upon entry, looking to her left then to her right, hoping to see someone she could sit with so it wasn't so completely obvious that she was only there to spy on FP.
Finally, she spotted Hermione in a corner booth all alone, probably waiting for someone.
Her hands began to tremble as she approached the woman.
"Hermione, May I sit?" She asked.
Hermione looked up at her slowly, giving a questionable glance then looking down at the table and back up at Alice again.
"I suppose I could use the company," Hermione finally answered, as she gestured toward the seat across from her.
Alice mumbled a thank you and threw her old friend a smile.
The next few moments were filled with silence. Alice sat up straight and was about to speak when FP approached the table.
"Good afternoon ladies," he said. "What can I getcha?"
Hermione ordered a coffee with cream and sugar and a piece of cherry pie. Then, she looked at Alice.
Hermione noticed something off about Alice. She watched her pause before entering the diner, she watched her pause again once she came in, and she noticed that Alice grew nervous as she approached her at the table, and now Alice's face was turning a deep shade of red. Something that the mighty Alice Cooper hadn't done since high school. She has been nothing like herself, and Hermione wondered why.
"She'll have the same," Hermione said to FP. "But two creams and no sugar in her coffee."
FP walked away and Alice gave Hermione a small smile.
"You remember how I like my coffee?" Alice asked.
"I assume it hasn't changed since high school." Hermione said, smiling back at Alice.
"You assume correctly."
After a moment of silence, Hermione begins to speak.
"What's going on, Ali?" Hermione asks.
"Wow. Nobody has called me that since high school." Alice replied. She shook her head before speaking again.
"Hal and I are getting divorced. My relationships with both of my daughters are going to hell. I have no friends because I've scared everyone away. I've lost everyone, Hermione."
"Oh come on, Al. You haven't lost everyone. Congratulations on the divorce though. Hal is a piece of shit. Always has been."
This made Alice chuckle.
"Well, I certainly know how to pick em don't I?" She asked as she glanced at FP, who was approaching with their pie and coffee.
"I'm sorry Hermione. For everything." Alice said sadly.
"Is the mighty Alice Cooper apologizing? I never thought I'd live to see the day." FP said jokingly.
The two women ignored him.
"Ali, I never stopped being your friend. I have always told you that I'd be there for you. Remember when my family took you in? I told you you'd always have a home with me, and you'd always have a family, and I meant it. Thank you for the apology, but it's unnecessary."
Alice was close to tears. The amount of respect and loyalty Hermione was showing her threw her. After everything she had done and said, her best friend was still her best friend. Alice knew she didn't deserve it. But she was thankful for it.
FP had since walked away and she figured now was a good time as any to get this secret off her chest.
"I'm still in love with him." She whispered.Hermione leaned over the table to hear Alice better.
"Still in love with who?" She asked.
"FP. I'm still in love with FP." Alice admitted.
She felt the tears roll down her cheek. She turned her head to look out the window. It had started raining.
Hermione moved so that she was sitting next to her friend, and when Alice felt the seat dip she turned to face Hermione. She let her sadness consume her, and let her friend hold her as she cried.
What an un-Alice like thing to do.
"You have to tell him." Hermione said softly. "I bet he still loves you too."
Alice looked over toward the man and saw he was looking at her. She wiped her tears, stood, and made her way to the cash register.
He watched her as she approached him, her face was puffy and red. It devastated him. He hated seeing her sad. But boy was she beautiful. Her blonde curls bouncing off her shoulders, her heels clicking with every step she took. Her legs, toned and tan. The curves of her hips, her perfect bust. And those eyes. He couldn't help but stare.
And she couldn't help but notice.
"See something you like, Mr. Jones?" She teased.
He nodded.
"Take me out tomorrow night. Maybe you can see more." She said with a wink.
He smiled.
"What about Hal?" He asked.
"Don't concern yourself with Hal. He won't be a problem." She said as she turned towards the door.
He nodded and followed her outside.
"Wait, Alice!"
She turned quickly and he put his arms around her waist to pull her close to him.
She thought he was going to kiss her.
"You forgot to pay."
