LOVE, Becky xx
The pain felt like hell.
"Shit, that looks nasty"
"You played well up and till then"
"That foot took a banging"
"Probably not as badly as his poor bed was banged against the wall last-"
"Enough boys, I have told you this once and I will say it again, we have to keep playing. 1 injured player or 5 injured players will NOT result in us losing, now get your heads out of the gutter and focus. Especially you Ryan!" Coach Hood instructed sternly, before throwing a hard ball at Toby.
Coach strolled up to me, his face showing a teeny bit of sympathy before throwing me an ice pack to put on my extremely swollen foot that was clearly dressing up as a tomato.
"Next time don't be stupid, bring the correct studs" he lectures as I wince at the ice connecting with my inflamed foot that was resting itself on my water bottle. Coach Hood shakes his head, before going back to the bench and yelling at the team to get in position.
-
"Do you want a lift back to uni?" Toby asks me as I try to hobble back to the coach. I nod, my foot could not handle that Long stuffy bus ride.
Toby offers me his arm, which I clutch onto greatfully as we make our way back to his old car. He grabs my sports bag and shoves it in the boot a long with his bag and jumps into the Drivers seat before turning the car on.
He flicks the radio button onto the station, capital and I drink my bottle of water as he hums the lyrics to an old Bruno Mars song.
"So Lyons, what did coach say about you and that foot?" Toby asks, a smirk appearing on his face as we both know it wasn't the sweet "get better soon" crap that our moms would say. "It went a Long the lines of "don't be stupid, bring the correct studs"" I respond, bobbing my unbruised foot around to the music and laughing a little. Toby turns the car, his smirk returning to his classic, you could say charming smile that was well known throughout school.
Toby was what people would classify as the "nice rugby player", he was always helping others and welcoming newbies to the team. Although he might have been sweet he had an impressive share of girls over in a week when he thought I was asleep.
He always helped me, topped up my gas when I forgot to and I was seeing Ale, washed up my plate when I was studying, woke me up on saturdays at 3 am to go visit Ale as I couldn't wake with an alarm. He was overall, my very good Friend and mine and Ale's saviour when it came to us seeing each other every Saturday.
"You need me to wake you up tomorrow?". A question he had asked every Friday either whilst were coming back from a match, or at the bar with a beer in our hand. I give him my best smile and reply with a "if you don't mind", which was my kind way of saying "yes please".
"So how is she?" Toby asks, obviously referring to Ale. I smile, however cringey it sounded whenever I heard her name I felt happy, whenever I was around her I had fun, she was my light in the darkest of places.
"She's classic Ale, obsessed with watching every crime related video on Netflix whilst trying to juggle her "new year, new health" motto by removing Deliveroo on her phone unless it's Sunday." I tell him, my smile growing wider as I switch my phone on to see her on my back on the edge of the Grand Canyon. Her brown hair was swept across her face, but you could still manage to see her bright green eyes underneath it. Her tanned arms were clinging around my neck, as if she was scared the wind would knock her off. She wore her classic, a white 80's band t-shirt with shorts, white vans and a dazzling smile to go with it.
I on the other hand looked like an extreme mess, my old leather jacket was clinging to me, my jeans were just simple and my hair was in the same position as usual which was swept to the side, ever so slightly. Complimenting my messiness was a cheesy smile to go with it. I remembered this day, like it had happened yesterday.
"Any luck with Harvard?" He says, a little gentler as he knows it's a bit of a sensitive matter. I sigh and shake my head, sympathetic emotions filling my heart.
Harvard was Ale's dream, the place she believed that would "change her life" and make her the happiest any human could be. However she sent her application out and a few months later she received a thin letter back telling her she was high on the waiting list and they would inform her when there was a spot available.. However for the past year she has been checking her mail box repeatedly and nothing has turned up.
I tried getting her to accept one of the other offers from universities for the time being like UCLA, Stamford even Oxford in London had accepted her! Yet she refuses to allow her head to be swayed and her education to carry on unless she got enrolled in Harvard.
It crushed me that I was getting a degree and there she was sitting in her room, alone trying to face time anyone to forget the loneliness of the day.
I suggested she moved to Colorado with me, so I could see her everyday instead of only seeing her on a Saturday, but she just shook her head giving me a small smile, holding my hand and said " Isaac, I can't move house, my mum would cry and the letter would never arrive at the right doorstep".
"Why doesn't she think of other Uni's? She got excepted into Oxford right? In London? That's Super hard and academic! Hell, why doesn't she even come here? We have a good criminology base" Toby suggests, obviously trying to hide his negative opinion on her extreme choice in the nicest way possible, because he's Toby.
"I tried mate, Harvard is her dream and she won't let go of it" I respond. I too, had said the same things as Toby to her and she just laughed the idea off, quoting the quote of "dreams don't expire" before turning on her speaker and singing to Mr Brightside.
