"The what?" Anne muttered to herself.

Diana linked her arm to Anne's, giving it a hearty squeeze. "Isn't this exciting?" Diana squealed. The atmosphere immediately became electrified, intrigued murmurs from the crowd started to fill the wide forest. And the youngsters were especially excited about the ordeal. Everyone started to whisper. Anne saw Moody and Charlie grinning, Billy and his friends patting each other's backs looking as if they were already formulating a plan. Even Josie Pye had a small smirk playing on her lips.

"Let me explain: the objective of the game is to retrieve the of fireworks hidden somewhere in these woods. There will be two opposing teams. Both teams will be given the same set of clues. Each clue will lead to the next, directing them to where the fireworks are. Mind you there will be obstacles along the way. I have assigned station keepers and they are scattered around the woods at present. They will see to it that you complete these obstacles before moving on to the next clue--"

"What's the prize?" Alex Kane, a highly competitive young boy who Anne recognized from school, asked with sly confidence.

"Glad you asked. The winning team gets the honor of lighting the fireworks when the new year strikes."

This caused a louder wave of excited murmurs circulating the crowd.

Anne felt especially excited. She knew that the hunt would require a great deal of tact and intellectual strategy, and this was her field of expertise.

She knew this would be her moment to shine and prove herself to everyone; a true heroine's conquest.

"I'm assuming the adults would like to participate?" Mr. Barry asked jokingly, and the elders laughed. "All right then. I have activities planned for us while the youngsters are away. Now, who wants to play?" Mr. Barry asked.

Immediately, multiple people stepped forward; there was Moody Spurgeon, Alex Kane, Billy Andrews, and Charlie Sloane. Jerry Baynard and his brother Paul were there as well. They walked to Mr. Barry, stepping out of the crowd circle.

Soon, all the Avonlea school boys who were of age were in the middle, including Gilbert.

Anne looked around, expecting for some of the girls to come forward, but all of them were just excitedly smiling and already cheering their favorites on.
