"Um, hi John," I whispered. She stared at the 10 year old, blonde hair, blue eyed boy who sat on his bed. He looked up at me with a huge smile on his face. The little gap between his two front teeth was showing; the little gap I was going to miss. I looked down at my shoes and places my hands behind my back.
"Is there something wrong?" John asked, his voice full of worry. I kept my head down, refusing to make eye contact. I heard a shuffle of feet and saw a pair of dinosaur socks in front of me. "Jasmine?"
I felt a warm hand against mine. I looked up to see him led me over to his bed. He sat down, still holding on. I took a deep breath and began to tell him the news.
"My mommy got a job in California-" I began.
"That's great!" John exclaimed. "Your mommy finally got the job." I cringed at his excitement and backed up a few steps. His face twisted into confusion. "What is it?"
I bit my lip and hesitantly sat down. Our bodies twisted so we were facing each other. I took another breath.
"But, we're moving there. I'm not gonna see you anymore,"
John looked at me, his eyes showing shock and sadness. His bottom lip began to pout out, something he always does when he was sad. "When are you leaving?"
I let out a shaky breath. "Today," His gaze dropped lower and began to play with his hands. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. Mommy just told me today." He gave me a short nod.
I stood up, and slowly started walking out his room, the room filled with rock stars and singers that I was going to miss. I walked down the stairs, putting my little hand on the banister. My vision began to be blurry and I felt a tear stream down my cheek. I placed my hand on the door knob when I heard the boyish voice calling my name. I turned around and saw John standing there. One cheek had a tear stain while his eyes were glossy. His hands were behind his back and he stared at me.
"Before you go," he whispered. "Can I have a hug?"
I gulped and smiled. I ran up to him and threw my arms around his neck. My tears decided to start flowing and they did, making his shoulder wet. I felt a tear make a mark on my shirt and heard him sniffle. I smiled and we pulled away. I wondered why his hands were behind his back and I looked at him with curiosity. He made a little boyish chuckle and held out a bracelet. I let out a gasp. The silver gleamed against the light and hanging on it was "J".
"My mommy told me to give you this for your birthday," John said as he helped me put it on my wrist. "But this will be a good time to give you it now."
I smiled up at him and held the "J" in my fingers. " 'J' for Jasmine?"
"Yup," he smiled, showing his gap again. " 'J' for Jasmine; my best friend."
I smiled even more and wrapped my arms around his torso. "Thank you Johny," I muffled into his shirt.
"Your welcome Jazzy," he whispered, a smile in his voice for using our nicknames.
I heard a honk outside. John and I ran up to the window to see my daddy and mommy in our car, looking up at the house. I looked back at John, who gave me a weak smile and nodded his head. I smiled back and squeezed him one last time. I walked out of his house, trying to stop the sniffles that kept on coming. I got in the car and saw my daddy and mommy looking at me.
"You okay brownie?" he asked, his face full of concern. I nodded my head and wiped the tears away with the back of my hand.
Mommy looked at my wrist and her lips curved into a smile. "From your best friend?" she asked.
I nodded, and smiled. "From my best friend,"
