K E N Z I E S P O V
——————————————————I woke up this morning, ready for a terrible Tuesday. I just had a feeling in my gut, that today was not going to be a good day.
Yesterday, which was a Monday, I had found out that I could stand for as long as I want now. My legs have gotten, just about, enough strength to do so, but I still have to work in my walking. Walking is a problem for me.
My legs slowly make their way over to my shower, stripping from my pajamas, and hoping into steamy water. It felt so nice to stand for as long as I possibly wanted, now. I don't have to sit while I'm showing anymore, which is just amazing.
After taking my shower, I blow dried my hair, then putting it into two, tight dutch braids, making sure that the braid is closer to my ear, rather than having it be up towards the top of my part. I throw on this outfit that I picked out the night before, to save time:
I threw on my backpack, slowly walking down the stairs, then walking to the car even more slowly.
"You're on time today!" My sister exclaims, pulling up into the driveway, just getting home from her boyfriends house.
"How's Jack?" I ask, taking a seat in the passenger side.
"He's good. I'm going to bring him over tonight, for dinner," Maddie says hesitantly, starting up the car.
"Great! I can wait to officially meet him, rather than talking to him through your phone screen," I reply, hoping that Jack was as nice as he was on FaceTime.
"He's excited to finally meet you and Mom," Maddie explains, tucking a piece of her short, light brown hair, behind her ear. "And Johnny?" Maddie adds, giving me a look of sympathy.
"Mads, Johnny and I aren't dating anymore. Remember.... we broke up so we could save our friendship," I reply, rolling my eyes.
"Everyone knows that you two still like each other. It's a known fact, that you two are meant for one another," She's says, pulling up into the school drive through.
"Just get my wheelchair out of the damn trunk," I rolls my eyes once again, opening the car door.
Maddie hops out of the car, moving quickly to the trunk, where my wheelchair is placed. I move my feet the the sidewalk, standing, while waiting for Mads.
"Thank you," I say, sitting down into the chair and strolling into the school.
My body struggles to open the door, for my wheelchair was in the way.... like always.
"Here let me help you with that," an unfamiliar voice comes from behind me.
"Oh thanks," I say in the quiet voice that I had in the beginning of the year.
The boy opens the door, looking back at me with a smile. I hadn't noticed this face anywhere. "How come I've never seen you before," I ask the slightly attractive boy, moving my wheelchair inside of the school.
"Oh, I'm new. I transferred here in Monday," the boy answers, walking over to his locker, me following right behind him.
"Well, welcome... locker buddy," I point out, showing that his locker is right next to mine.
"So I see. M-" the boy starts, being interrupted by the bell.
"My name is Brandon," he restarts, walking over to his first class.
My eyes meet the group, redirecting my attention over the the faces they were making. "Im Kenzie," I say, looking back at him. "I'll see you around Brandon," I wave back at the boy.
"Who is that cutie?" Annie asks, doing her own version of a 'love bug dance'
"His name is Brandon, and he all yours," I reply with a smile.
"Maybe I'll take you up on that offer," She says, keeping her eyes on Brandon, who was almost out of sight.
"Where's John?" I ask, looking around to see that only John was not in the hallway. I thought that maybe he went to his first class, though he normally skips with the rest of us.
Everyone gives each other the same face. The face that says 'Kenzie is in for a surprise'. I didn't know what kind of surprise, if there even was one.
"Follow us," Carson explains, walking to the other doors that led to the football field.
I was very confused, very confused. I had no idea what was going on.
As the doors open, I see rose petals on the grass, making a trail that leads to something, too far away for me to see what.
As we get closer, I can see the John is standing there, holding a sign. I try and squint to see what the same was. I had an idea of what was going on, but I needed to see what was on that sign to be sure I was right.
About two steps closer, or rolls for me, I see that the sign says 'Homecoming?'
"Why did you do something so big for homecoming?" I ask with a laugh, going up to hug John in surprise.
"All for you?" He shrugs his shoulders in the cutest way possible.
"Just as friends though, right?" I reassure him with a smile.
He smiles back, nodding his head. "Of course!" He exclaims, "just as friends."
I stand up, hugging John, holding his body, tight, in my arms. "Yes!" I reply, referring to going to homecoming with John Orlando.
I gasp. "I need to find a dress!" I mock the basic girls, rolling my eyes sarcastically.
John laughs, pulling me into another hug. "Are you sure you guys are just going as friends?!" Hayden joked from a distance.
John and I pull away from our hug. "Yup. Just friends," we reassure everyone for the last time.
I think we both knew that we weren't going as 'just friends'. I think we both knew that we still liked each other.... a lot, just by the look we gave one another. Maybe it was just me... or maybe it was the both of us— together.
