I could barely think. All energy had gone and now I couldn't even stand, but I had too. Whatever was chasing us was going to kill us. We lost it, but not for forever, and my companion was not the person I would choose to keep watch. I scanned the damp cave. Water dripped form stalactites and ecoed it's music farther down the endless cavern. Fear grabbed at my thought every time something moved. I could hear the flap of bat wing, the light steps of a nearby rat. A noise different from the rest found its way to my ears. The stiff fabric on someone's back had torn under the swift movement it's wearer. I turned to see Grayson. His sleeve had caught on the side of the cave, and tore.

Pulling the fabric off the wall, he shrugged, "O well."

I leaned on mossy walls of the cave, breathing in the musty air. Grayson stat on the rock floor next to me, looking blankly into the distance. His eyes were strong but the permanent fog encasing them left the ever present knowledge that, he was if fact, blind. He fiddled with his sleeve for a time, attempting to lean the extent of the tier.

Giving me a quick smile, it was clear he sensing that I needed rest. He wanted me too. Although they no longer functioned, his eyes held emotion that was plain to see. He smiled again, lifting his cheeks to cover a small portion of his glossy eyes. I knew he knew how much I needed to rest, but with that thing chasing us, how could I?

"It's ok, " he said, patting the ground at his side. " I'll protect you."

I did my best to let the tension out of my shoulder as I rested my head on his lap. With the smooth melody of his voice I was finlay able to rest my eyes. FInally able to escape the looming danger. Knowing that he couldn't do much to protect me in the small cave, I decided to trust that he would know what to do if trouble arose earlier than I thought. Even with the exhaustion that choked me, I found it surprising how fast sleep found me.

Her silver hair fell to the floor as consciousness slipped from her grasp. I knew it was hard for her to think that I could protect her but, I was glad that she had trusted my jument enough to finally relax. Truthfully I didn't know how to protect her. I needed to because, I can't fail her.
